This confirms a conversation I had with a friend who works for Sky, I suspect Mitre 10 cup could be a casualty of costs ..

If that's the case then NZR needs a bullet. Unless they've sold it separately, they need to have bundled it together, right at the the time they had a bit of leverage over Sky - let Sky figure out how to make it work financially.

How much can the NPC be worth though? Must be a losing entity

Very little these days I would suggest. I know a lot of people get upset about the thought, but it's no longer the amateur era. At best it's the pathway for players who didn't get selected out of school, which is now the modern professional route.

Watching it fizzle out is sad for the amateur days but if that is what it takes then so be it.

Not much, that's why I said it needed to be bundled together with the money making stuff. (Which it appears has happened).

I don't know what the ratings figures are for Mitre 10 Cup, but Sky surely need it as a credible live sport event through August - October.

I'm not sure the Warriors' annual play-off run would be enough of a drawcard to keep most subscribers happy! 🙂

@Chris-B the problem is for Sky, is the cost ,maybe with a recalibrated format , not all games will be shown live..

I wonder if Sky playing the NPC games on Prime would be an option. Free to air, build an audience, extra ad revenue coming in?

@Steven-Harris If they're going to produce the games is it much more expensive to do them live?

They're doing live 1st XV games aren't they, which would seem a more expendable target.

I just wonder what will people pay Sky subscriptions for through that late winter/spring period if they don't have Mitre 10 Cup? It seems like a flagship product for that period.

1st XV games are good 'earners' for sky, as in they have great numbers watching them. They're rare and a treat, so the numbers are multiples more than most NPC games. The cost of NPC games is not showing them live but the OBC, so the only way to cut costs is to record less, or maybe reduce costs a little to back to single crappy camera position like the heartland coverage. I think the idea of putting them on free to air, with ad revenue, would be a win. Certainly the NPC clubs and their sponsors would like it

The Reds have added firepower to their backline after signing Melbourne Storm wing Suliasi Vunivalu on a two-year deal, beginning in 2021.

A schoolboy rugby union talent in New Zealand, Vunivalu will make the switch back to the 15-man code following several years in the NRL.

During his time in rugby league, the electrifying wing has broken the record for the most tries of any player in his first two seasons and currently has a total of 72 tries in 94 appearances for the Storm – including 11 in the 2019 season.

Reds head coach Brad Thorn said: “As a group we look forward to welcoming Suliasi Vunivalu back to rugby and to Queensland in 2021.

“Suliasi grew up playing rugby in New Zealand before becoming one of the NRL’s most exciting players.
