@crucial said in Worst songs of eras: Was massively overplayed to the point of annoying though. I'd say that's true for a lot of successful songs. Looking at this list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Year-End_number-one_singles_and_albums) I don't see a lot of songs that have replayability for me.

@antipodean Jesus wept. Lot of novelty songs feature in the 60's. A very high proportion of the top selling sounds could feature in this thread. Adele did well to have the same album top seller two years running

@barbarian said in Worst songs of eras: @crucial said in Worst songs of eras: @taniwharugby said in Worst songs of eras: I'll disagree with that one. As much as I'm not a fan of anything else O'Connor has done I think she did a perfect rendition of this. Even Prince couldn't top it and he wrote it. Was massively overplayed to the point of annoying though. I'll stick up for Sinead as well. This is a really interesting article on that song, as a part of a wider series into every US number 1. Sinead ripping up a picture of the Pope on SNL looked insane at the time, but has aged remarkably well. https://www.stereogum.com/2160540/the-number-ones-sinead-oconnors-nothing-compares-2-u/columns/the-number-ones/ This entire thread feels like his column when he gets whiny about a song he doesn't like because it's not cool enough. Me, I second @crucial nomination of that 4 Non Blonde song. I can't stand listening to that.

@dogmeat said in Worst songs of eras: @victor-meldrew Yeah It's why I was keen to put up a version that showed the lyrics so people could .... enjoy ... the ... full poetic majesty of them slipped and almost hurt herself
and I laughed until I criedI mean it resonates with teh romantics the twig, the tears, Man, you missed out those lush, oh-so-tasteful heavenly choirs at the end

Bobby Brownâs âMy PrerogativeâBig year for Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli. Of course the latter get vilified for shit songs that they didnât even sing. Paula on the other hand gets a pass for some actually quite decent pop tunes and for being insanely hot.

There's some bloody good songs amidst the dross though. "The Living Years" is a great song. And am I the only one who really rates Genesis - old and new - but thinks Phil Collins is utter shite?

@victor-meldrew said in Worst songs of eras: @nepia said in Worst songs of eras: @jc Never heard or heard of that song. Well, aren't you the lucky one... Not really, as I just played it. @jc said in Worst songs of eras: @nepia Then don't play it. There's still time to save your sanity. It was a shit disco song, which was already a pretty low bar. See above, too late.

@majorrage said in Worst songs of eras: @tim said in Worst songs of eras: There was a lot of shit in the grunge era, but this was the most mawkish, and nakedly striving to be sensitive and deep - pure retarded adolescence. Vedder was very cringe, and this was a song he wrote before joining Pearl Jam. @mn5 said in Worst songs of eras: Itâs gonna be really awkward when someone posts something and someone else mentions how much they like it. It took 2 minutes. This tune is an absolute anthem for me. One of my best rugby memories (I was not a flash player) involves us singing this song in the bus on the way home from a win (Raglan I think).
