This is weird, I have no memory of there a. being a winter Olympics last year, and b. NZ winning two Golds. But at the least I must have read about it here.

Damn, it's a bit early for early onset dementia.

Winter Olympics are cool, but they're not the X-Games

How do Gen Y and beyond feel about being forced to compete in the X Games?

Y? X? I get them confused. Which is the one that can’t pull its pants up?

The correct choice, given she won an Olympic gold and silver.

@Bovidae yep, no arguments with her winning, and to be fair, couldn't argue with any of the award winners, mightn't all be in my sports, but pretty deserving anyway.

Halberg's time again, and Lydia Ko won the Supreme Award (interestingly all the nominees were female). I agree with this, as GOAT as Carrington is, canoe is pretty niche compared to golf.

          Halberg Awards 2024 winners
Supreme award: Dame Lydia Ko (golf)

Sportswoman: Ko. Other finalists: Ellesse Andrews (cycling - track), Dame Lisa Carrington (canoe sprint), Melie Kerr (cricket), Erin Routliffe (tennis), Emma Twigg (rowing).

Sportsman: Hamish Kerr (athletics). Other finalists: Finn Butcher (canoe slalom), James McDonald (horse racing), Hayden Wilde (triathlon), Chris Wood (football).

Team: Carrington, Olivia Brett, Alicia Hoskin and Tara Vaughan (canoe sprint). Other finalists: Black Ferns (rugby sevens), Lucy Spoors and Brooke Francis (rowing), Team New Zealand (sailing), White Ferns (cricket), Carrington and Hoskin (canoe sprint).

Para athlete: Anna Grimaldi (para athletics). Other finalists: Danielle Aitchison (para athletics), Anna Taylor (para cycling), Nicole Murray (para cycling), William Stedman (para athletics).

Coach: Gordon Walker (canoe sprint). Other finalists: Jon Andrews (cycling - track), Aaron Osborne (canoe slalom), James Sandilands (athletics), Cory Sweeney (rugby sevens).

I think Kerr's achievement is the best - the field is so large to win gold is extraordinary. Like sprinting, it's something tried everywhere by basically all kids - so to get up for a track and field gold in a category like that is amazing.

Also, kind of cool it's the middle word of the Olympic motto (which should probably actually be something around graft, cash, corruption; but that's another story)

@nonpartizan we like to win our medals sitting down. Boats, bikes and horsies have served us well

Hard to argue that Lydia didn't deserve it

                    1. Paris Gold medal (probably the most dramatic thing I watched from Paris)
                    2. Women's British Open win
                    3. LPGA Hall of Fame qualification

                    Not a bad year

It was sort of like they gave Carrington an award without her winning the big prize.

I was hoping that Andrews got some recognition but Ko is a good choice too.

Stoked that Ko got it. Very well deserved after a truly phenomenal year.

As for Kerr....meh! I was hoping for James McDonald but knew it would be unlikely.

@Machpants Delighted for Lyds. Loved her phlegmatism and humility last year after winning the Olympic Gold and the Women's Open within two weeks of each other.
