Payton Spencer was playing at fullback for Hamilton BHS against Auckland Grammar, and was the equal best player in the game along with Hamilton BHS no.7 Oli Mathis. Spencer regularly injected himself into the backline to provide the final pass for his wingers, while scoring at least one try himself using his speed to take a gap and beat defenders. Mathis is very quick for an openside and skinned a number of AGS players to score a few tries himself. HBHS played behind a strong wind in the 1st half and led 31-0 at the break.

Hamilton BHS 55 - 0 Auckland Grammar School

@taniwharugby The starting AGS 1st 5 was replaced at HT, so not sure if your son's former teammate was 10 or 20.

As this scoreline and other games they have played so far suggest, AGS aren't very strong this year. I'm not sure if this was their best XV with 1A games either side of this midweek fixture.

@Bovidae no idea, didnt see a teamsheet.

His name is Monty Parkinson, usually a strong defensive player for a 10.

Both players were quite small. I haven't seen a AGS team list either. All I can tell you is that the starter had dark hair and the reserve was blonde-headed.

@Bovidae Monty is blond haired, yeah not big, but is usually a strong defender (although tough in a thumping...)

Watched the two wellington games - St Pats vs NP Boys and Mana vs St Bernards.

Stream will rue missed chances, mistakes and poor play from the starting 1st 5. The 2nd 5 and lock for NP Boys were quite impressive and will go a long way to helping this team succeed. Streams front row and outside backs looked good. Once again, 10 for stream was woeful. At one stage attempted a chip 5m out from the opposition try line. When subs were made stream looked even better. Reserve halfback was solid and moving the 15 to 1st 5 paid dividends. Reserve prop was awesome.

Bernards were too clinical for a lackluster Mana. The 7 and 15 for Bernards were terrific in poor conditions. Manas tackled everything but otherwise the team played poorly. Really missing the 9, 10 and 15 they had last year

This came up on my YT feed. Interesting that Willie Rickards is the AGS coach, and DJ Forbes is one of his assistants. For MAGS, Tony Hanks is the coach and Karl Te Nana an assistant coach.

                  Results Thursday 2 June 2022

                  Traditional
                  Lindisfarne College 7 - 33 Hastings BHS

                  Round 4
                  Feilding HS 47 - 7 Rathkeale College

                  Miles Toyota Championship
                  Round 5
                  Marlborough BC 10 - 26 Nelson College

I watched the FAHS v Rathkeale game while working, so didn't watch individual players, but Feilding HS looked strong again. It was one-way traffic for most of the game, in awful conditions. The field gradually turned into a lake.

I've posted live-updates and some of my thoughts on the Lindisfarne v Hastings Boys game in the Hawkes Bay Schoolboy Rugby thread.

St John's Hamilton look to be the best of the Waikato CNI schools this year. They are at FAHS next week - big game between the unbeaten schools.

New Plymouth BHS vs Hamilton BHS is a sports exchange too, as was HBHS vs AGS last week.

It looks like Māori TV have the streaming rights to the Super 8 competition, because today's games were livestreamed, and also Saturday's games will be on their YouTube Channel. Below are the links to today's games, but I heard there were some technical issues during the NPBHS and HamBHS game.

I will post the list of fixtures for Saturday, tomorrow, but I've already seen that several CNI games have been postponed due to illness.

I watched the New Plymouth BHS vs Hamilton BHS game live via the Whakaata Māori youtube link. The weather was really bad for a while in the 1st half. The rain was so heavy there were streams of water going down the steps. The commentary didn't sync with the video as he was using the monitor due to visibility issues.

Because of the conditions, in the 1st half especially, there were a lot of handling errors. A couple of Spencer highlights. The first charging down a conversion from right in front of the posts, while the second was a try-saving tackle right on FT when he chased down a NPBHS player.

@Bovidae Yeah, I saw that. That try-saving tackle was excellent! I also noticed that as soon as Hamilton Boys' were 24 - 0 up (after about an hour), and players were getting replaced, the level of their game went down significantly, allowing New Plymouth to come back. Not sure whether complacency was creeping in, or whether their bench players just weren't as good as their starters.

Even when the rain stopped and the sun starting shining, that field looked like a swamp.

@Stargazer There aren't many players from last year remaining in the Hamilton BHS team, so it is almost a completely new team. I understand that most of the reserves are yr 11, so young and inexperienced. The reserve 1st 5 made some costly mistakes including missing the tackle for NPBHS's second try. Hamilton tried to be too expansive in the last 10 mins leading to some intercepts. A good lesson for them. The 2nd XV won 62-0, indicating some depth.
