It's not a uniquely NZ Rugby attitude, but in modern rugby there is this obsession with errors. Fuck what a player creates, you make an error, you're cooked. Some of our absolute greats of even modern times would be slated over and over on here.
I'm as guilty as anyone, but i am really trying to change. In an era again dominated by defence, i want to fall in love with players who are trying shit, whether it comes off or not. @taniwharugby so funny, the sand piles for kicking, so little shape, kicking the leather off, line out scrums, piles of bodies every ruck, instant scrums, not even mentioning the bench in the line ups, love it. First try was an absolute cracker

@Canes4life Favourite player when playing for ABs (He is only a shithouse when playing for the Canes :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes: ). Just a genuine character. Was quietly saddened by his use of "learnings", "take it on board" and other Foster-era soundbites recently though.

I watched the 1987 RWC final last night, which I had recorded when Sky broadcast all the NZ-France RWC matches leading up to this year's opening match. Rugby was a different game back then. The forwards controlled the scrum engages and didn't waste 30 s doing it, rucking was allowed and there were plenty of mistakes from both teams. The match stats wouldn't make for happy reading.
Fox missed an easy penalty in the 1st half, and both sideline conversions, but we think of him as a goal kicker who never missed. The lineouts were a free-for-all where you were just as likely to win the oppositions throw-in as your own. I had forgotten there was a large temporary stand that was erected outside Eden Park. And to confirm this was a different era one of the French management was happily (nervously) smoking while watching the game.
