I forgot how fast the group stage goes in the world cup. The pacing is fantastic, really keeps the tournament moving. I get the reason why rugby, league etc need longer breaks but it's still a selling point for this tournament.

One of the reasons Rugby wants to expand RWCs and possibly split into a plate type comp. You can schedule more midweek games.

Aren't FIFA shifting to a 48 team comp and 3 team groups next World Cup? Seems overkill

Just telling my son how awesome the 98 World Cup was

So we went through the team lists

Some of the squads were frankly ridiculous. Just amazing players everywhere.

              What a tournament

Japs come back from 1-0 down to beat Germany 2-1

              Thoroughly deserved

Was it costs rica that denied nz a place? That’ll learn them.

Long road back for Germany. The match up with Spain is basically a must win for them. Could be out in the group stage twice in a row.

Yes. They setup very defensively against NZ, so that obviously didn't work for Spain. 🤣

UEFA could survive without FIFA. No one else though I think. Aside from Brazil and Argentina other countries outside Europe don’t generally offer much at the pointy end. But a FIFA World Cup without uefa countries woujd be a dud.

@Billy-Tell someone just reminded me that UEFA and their south american equivalent have an existing memorandum of understand re several things (ref exchanges programs etc), if they did align to leave FIFA it could be very interesting to watch

Croatia v Morocco was fucking boring. No intent to attack at all.

Some old squads are battling too. Belgium and Argentina look ponderous. Germany are looking shit for the 2nd straight tournament.

Based on what i have seen so far, France look a level above. They are not only skillful, they are big and fast and skillful (tempered by their opposition being a bit shit). England v France in the quarters (should it pan out that way) will be awesome.

Well via the Euro cup they have a viable alternative that already exists as a competition to the FIFA world cup.

Admittedly I'm 100% ignorant in regards to the financial and legal implications and the role FIFA play in the Euro cup - whether they provide hefty financial support or simply clip the ticket.

But in very simple terms drop FIFA - announce that the Euro cup is now the world cup and anyone else who wants to leave FIFA and join them can and boom - direct competition with FIFA.

@mariner4life so glad Croatia did snag a win in that one. They were soft and even worse that Morocco.

Japan result was amazing even after a very soft penalty.

Ohh Canada, how many chances do you need? That was a pretty poor penalty attempt.

Germany would be better unleashing their young players but you get the sense it will be a case of too little too late.
