I've got to say that Hamilton BHS was a little lucky in the final. They were up 21-3 playing with the wind and then conceded a try just before HT so it was 21-8 at the break. In the 2nd half they rarely got out of their own half and seemed to be on the wrong side of the ref at times, combined with some poor discipline. A late length of the field try sealed the win while being behind 22-21.

Higashi Fukuoka High School was definitely a big step up from the other Japanese schools and defended very well. That said, Hamilton BHS butchered 3 tries with poor final passes. They also played the SF and final without their top lock (Tama Hodgson) so hopefully he is ready to go for the Super 8.

No Sky TV coverage of 1st XV rugby this year, due mainly to 1A's decision. That is a shame for people living in other parts of the country who may want to watch these games.

@Bovidae Short-sighted. 1st XV rugby is so much more than Auckland. Just look at what John McGlashan did last year. Or Feilding HS. There are so many games that would be a great watch!

I hope Maori TV again streams Super 8!

@Bovidae Yeah, even St John's, Hastings, put more than 40 on them and they usually finish last in the CNI. I guess these are "traditional" fixtures or exchanges, and they don't want to break the tradition?

@mikedogz Manurewa HS aren't doing too well. They defaulted in Rd 1 and were well beaten in their second game in the Harbour 1A competition.

Seems kind of ridiculous to have such a large distance between teams. Weird for club connections too.

@Tim Auckland school teams wouldn't know what an away game was. In theory it was to strengthen the competition as Wesley is in the CNI.

Speaking of the CNI and distance. Paerata to Masterton is what you call a long way.

The Counties comp would be way stronger if the big schools came back. Even if they had a combined comp with Waikato. Even without HBHS but with CNI schools it would be the same level as the current CNI with less travel.
