In previous years Manurewa were very dominant in the Counties Secondary School competition with Wesley College away playing in the CNI. In an attempt to find better competition, I believe they tried to join the Auckland Secondary Schools but were denied entry. They then joined the North Harbour competition (along with Whangarei BHS).
They have for reasons unknown not performed this season.

Bovidae

Pukekohe HS also tends to play the 2nd XVs (or lower) from the Hamilton schools. I guess it depends on the relative strength of your local schools.

@Pepe IIRC, last year they were top 4 in the NH comp too, so the fall has been huge.

I know WBHS have a reasonably small side this year, although many year 12's so next year should be stronger.

@Bovidae the team is full of year 11’s, all the year 13’s decided to play league this year. I’m picking you’ll see much improved results over the next 2 years

@Dolamite Yeah, I'd heard that many played RL but I didn't realise it was a mass exodus.

I understand that St Paul's College have done the opposite as their coaches thought it was better for their players to develop via rugby in the 1A than schoolboy RL.

Are schools starting to play games for Top 4 yet? Pukekohe High are playing Wesley on the 15th of July. Manurewa wouldn't have been considered this year and the best team in the actual Counties competition is a combined team, Onewhero/Tuakau.

@mikedogz Only in the Chiefs region. In all other regions, it happens after the main competitions have finished. For example, in the Hurricanes region, the first game to determine one of the Hurricanes semi-finalists is on 12 August.

5th August: 1st XV Super 8 Final
12th – 26th August: Chiefs Cup
31st August – 3rd September: Top 4, Palmerston North

The Chiefs Cup will eventually be SFs for the four top teams from each province after they have played their regional qualifying games. The CNI finishes later than the Super 8 so Wesley wouldn't have too many free Saturdays to play other C-M schools after they finished.
