Our second innings also went from 149 for no loss to 167/3.

Blundell is quietly building himself a pretty bloody handy record. 4 tons, an average of 45 from 40 innings with only 4 not outs.

I remember after Parore retired we had a real period of purgatory until Baz settled the wicket keeping position down, and since then it feels like we've had a bit of an conveyor belt with Baz, BJ and Blundell all looking absolutely world class.

      Absolutely.

Not an exaggeration to say we’d be fucked without him.

I’m still not entirely sure which of Baz or BJ makes my all time test XI.

Blundell is complicating things further if he carries on like this.

15 years ago Ian Smith had a bloody good claim to being our number one all time keeper. Blundell is probably a few years away from pushing him out of the top 3.

After a shaky start he seems to have settled into his batting role nicely. He is the anchor of the lower order now, the way BJ used to be

It’s like BJ never left. Blundell seems to have the same uncanny ability to get runs when needed ( which is often as of late )

Yeah. In his first few innings he looked a little unsure. But now he pretty much does what BJ did, and he can go into attack mode as well

Ordinarily this morning might have been a good time for the usual rant about two Test series, and if only there had been a decider scheduled for Friday at Hagley.

But in this case there seems something very satisfying about the after glow of a one run Test victory. Especially after the first Test margin, and then following on.

(I hope anyone who genuinely saw that coming also cashed in big time at the TAB! 🙂 )

I fear he may have over estimated the winning margin by a factor of 100 🙂

I certainly thought they left the door ajar for us when they enforced the follow on, but not enough to put money on it, damn it.

It was quite unusual. Conventional wisdom these days seems to be pile on a total and bowl the opposition out on a failing wicket

I hope what transpired here reinforces the fact that two test series are a complete and utter waste of time.

How good would a third one be right now ?

Losing after enforcing only happens 1.35% of the time.

                        Winning 78.38%

Fairly sure one of them is when Dravid and Laxman scored a truckload between them.

Oz got that one really wrong. Put India back in to score 657/7 then get skittled for 212

One was in 1894 so I doubt even the GOM here will recall that (Aus v Eng @SCG)

The other was obviously also Aus loss. 1981 @ Headingley. The convicts got rolled for 111 chasing 230

Well to be fair England could not possibly have come any closer to NOT joining that lot.

Have seen the replays a few times now. I genuinely feel bad for Jimmy Anderson.

I’ve said it on here before and I’ll say it again. Cricket is such a “Batsman’s” game ( never more so than in this era of T20 and Bazball )

Enough of Jimmys more recognised teammates shat the bed when the pressure was on and he had to come out and try and win it for his team…….he’s a bowler and while he’s no Chris Martin he bats 11 for a reason.

There’s never a case where frontline bowlers can’t get a breakthrough and batsmen who aren’t bowlers HAVE to come on and do the business.

If you’re a shit bowler you never have to do it. ( it speaks volumes that Stephen Fleming didnt turn the arm over for a SINGLE over in 111 tests )

That was the test with the Ambrose 7 for 1 spell to end it.

No that magic spell was in Perth at the WACA. The 1 run win was in Adelaide, the test right before the WACA one.

@Crucial I was hitching through Norway. Got picked up by some Aussies around Jutenheim who were typically loud about how magnificent their team was and how shite the Poms were. This woud have been on the Saturday when the Poms were already one down needing about a gazillion to make the Aussies bat again.

Bumped into them again a few days later in Oslo and they were much more subdued.

The only way you could follow the match was to get an English language paper anbd read what had happened - usually two days late.

It was a fantastic series even following it from afar. History repeated in the next test although not quite so spectacularly. It was a very average Aussie batting order.

Anyone want to have a crack at the other three Tests lost after enforcing the follow on?

                                          Is that a question ?

Fairly sure one of them is when Dravid and Laxman scored a truckload between them.

                                          yep
Oz got that one really wrong. Put India back in to score 657/7 then get skittled for 212

One was in 1894 so I doubt even the GOM here will recall that (Aus v Eng @SCG)

The other was obviously also Aus loss. 1981 @ Headingley. The convicts got rolled for 111 chasing 230

I remember that game well and they were chasing 130 i.e. not very much at all and I think they reached 50-1 before

8/43 Bob got that day. Have marked his with an (x)

                                          1-13 Wood 2-56 Chappell (x) 3-58 Hughes (x) 4-58 Yallop (x)
                                          5-65 Border 6-68 Dyson (x) 7-74 Marsh (x) 8-75 Lawson (x)
                                          9-110 Lillee (x) 10-111 Bright (x)

Beefy got MOTM though. A century (149) and a 6fer in Aus first innings

A funny quirk about Bob Willis’s career is despite the 8 fer he never took ten wickets in a match. Ever.

Wouldn’t be many great bowlers ( and he was one ) with that dubious claim.

Joel Garner is another I can think of, he took fuck all 5 fers too !
