Disappointed there is no Spurs-Liverpool content on this thread. For a neutral, the ending was hilarious as it would have been had Liverpool scored with 9 players in the 96th minute. Spurs had no clue how to break down a 9 man team, playing way too narrow with both wide players not starting wide and then cutting in on their stronger foot. Finally they get a right footer on the right to ping one into the box and Matip with the excellent finish.

Plus they are admitting to making a mistake of the Liverpool goal that was not given. The red was harsh too.

@dogmeat It was bizarre that they never reviewed the offside at all - a different issue to not drawing the lines correctly. That sort of decision was exactly what VAR was invented for - assistant made a call of offside as it was a very close call. So we could get rid of VAR and then just blame the assistants instead?
A lot of enjoyable Liverpool whining about the cards. On Jones, looked a red to me - sure he made contact with the ball first but it ended up as a potential leg breaker for Bissouma. For Jota I disagree with Liverpool fans on the first yellow. They show footage of Udogie tripping over his own leg but given that players generally don't trip over their own legs, I think it was a cynical foul by Jota running behind the player so that he nudged his leg causing the loss of balance. Second was a clear yellow and dumb play by Jota having just been booked.

@broughie I thought it was red personally. Of course there was no intent, but he caught Bissouma and that's the risk you take if you don't get the ball cleanly. It's also how legs get badly broken.

@African-Monkey I agree, but there has to be intent. He was playing the ball and what happened incidentally was not his fault. So if you head the ball and hit someone in the head on the follow through it's a red? Doesn't make sense.

Makes all sense. Intent has no bearing and has not for some time. He had no intent to injure, but he was reckless and clumsy. Just like rugby players showing poor technique, they don't mean to hurt the attacker, but they are getting YC and RCs for being clumsy and reckless

Red was fine for me. Jotas first YC was harsh but the 2nd was a stonewall yellow. Goal should have stood wasn’t offside.

stonewall red, you can't go over the top of a ball studs up into someone's shin. That's been a red card for about 20 years. Both yellows also completely fair, you can't trip someone chasing back however accidental you make it look.
As for the disallowed goal, it was shocking. I saw somewhere on social media that the mistake happened because the VAR official mistakenly thought the goal had been given and the cursory look was so clear cut that he said check over as it was clearly onside. It explains why the mistake was made but not why it wasn't corrected when he saw the ball being placed for a free kick.
The concept of VAR isn't the problem, its the lack of transparency, the lack of protocol on how its used and the fact football refs are so unwilling to admit mistakes or call out their colleagues when they do

Tough week for Bournemouth fans. looked like we were starting to get used to the press and some players coming back and put in a woeful effort against Arsenal. To make it worse watching our Neto concede 4 and GON's Neto terrorise City made the loss even more bitter
Finally some easier games coming up, but really need some wins otherwise will be a tough season

@KiwiPie Yeah GON is a good manager. I think our new owners have the best intentions and a high press looks good and works well when all on board. However half the team haven't worked out how to play it and we recruited some players who cant play it and others who are yet to still even get out of the injury ward. So to your point it looks rather confused.
Also our draw has not been great, but regardless the Arsenal match was a step backwards. There will be high expectations against Everton though and I am sure if we don't start getting them, then people will be under pressure

PGMOL have released the audio from Diaz offside. As I said above, the VAR ref thought the goal had been awarded so just said check complete. Listening to the audio it’s revealing how bad the process is and how obviously liable to a fuck up.

I listened to a podcast that compared the clear wording used by the TMO in rugby in the way that the ref asks "is there any reason not to award a try?" etc and whether something similar should be introduced for football. Comms not helped by the fact that multiple footballers are usually screaming into the ears of the ref.

Welcome back Dodge. Looked like a red to me, tackler responsible for wear their studs end up and he was stretching and out of control. For Jota yellow 1, amusing to see the Liverpool rabid fans (not all are rabid) saying Udogie tripped over his own leg as if that is something that athletes do without a 3rd party involved.

@KiwiPie yep, that difference was stark. But then there’s a lot more pressure to get on with the game in football circles I guess. Seemed like it was done in a hurry. Can imagine how sick the VAR guy felt when he realised what happened

That var transcript is a tough read! Seems like he realised pretty much the moment he couldn't go back anymore.
Definitely feels like they need a clearer process like pretty much every other sport (rugby, league, cricket), where the var says 'original decision x, checking if that is correct'.
This is fifa though. I expect their solution will be two more officials with vague responsibilities but needing a weekly game cheque.

It's not even grey, it looks like a pink grey. Worst third strip we've had in years
Edit: it's actually beige I think. Ugh
Luckily Ange ball is more attractive and interesting than the kit

I've finally had a chance to watch the Arsenal-Man City game. A very nervy start from Arsenal, and Raya in particular, but Arteta finally gets his first win over the Citizens. This was a very even game where both teams cancelled each other out. Martinelli's introduction at HT made a big difference. Haaland didn't even have a shot on goal.

My first thought was why are the Blacks Caps playing soccer? Beige IMO
