If this wasn't edited I wish Duco would just let this guy loose on the media without theirs or Barry's intervention.

Comes across as a very intelligent, well spoken guy.

I like his humility but there's definite genuine confidence in the answers that I hadn't been getting from the NZ televised interviews. Barry and Lonegan hovering over him always seems forced and disingenuous.

http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/parker-talks-takam-and-joshua-333059

I like Joe , he is a decent guy ,

but I find his management team cringeworthy , especially when they start their trash talking of other boxers in a sport where they have no credibility

Yeah joseph is a great guy. Had the pleasure of sharing a table for breakfast with him at a hotel we were both staying at this time last year. Very down to earth fella.

Lonergan and co do like to build the hype tho. But to a certain extent they need to given the business they are in

It's part of the business. You can't make money or fund a campaign without drumming up interest and the standard practice in boxing is trash talking and hyping.

Tbh I don't see Lonergan hovering over Joseph that much. He tends to do his talking away from camp. Barry has always been a weirdo but he does actually seem to know a bit as a trainer. I hope he has taken from the lessons he learnt and mistakes he made with Tua.

You have to admit that Duco have actually done a pretty good job in getting Parker into the 'limelight'. Some clever match ups that have boosted ranking and some hype that has been latched onto. When you consider that they haven't been fighting in the US or UK at all and have nowhere near the pull of the big promoters they have steered Parker toward the big time.

hyping up fights is fine , but trash talking opponents , that is usually the job of the fighter not the promoters, I think at least it would carry more weight if they had boxing pedigree.

i found it amusing when Daddy Brown won his title , Joseph is tweeting him congratulating him , Lonergan is mouthing off through the media, bagging him out, it does appear at times they are not on the same page.

maybe Joseph just doesn't like doing that or feels he cant do it?

I reckon I'd struggle to trash talk someone, particularly if you haven't met them, although I guess I can tell plenty of you willis' are fluffybunnies!

I would guess it is because Joseph himself is not the type to trash talk and someone needs to do it. It attracts the interest of the other fighter and makes possible match ups more likely.

Could also be that they want to keep Joseph's persona natural and not complicate his mind by having him act out being someone he isn't.

Agree with all that is said about him, I know a few folk who have met him and yeah, sounds a really nice bloke.

I've always found the whole mentality of boxing promoting amusing though......imagine if Rugby was the same instead of clichés about taking each game as it comes and "We're the All Blacks but we really respect Outer Mongolia as a Rugby nation and take this game seriously"

Would it really hurt them to go out and say they're gonna put over a hundred points on them and humiliate them ?

End of the day money is what will talk loudest , They have already missed opportunities because of a lack of cash. Joseph has to get himself known overseas , being a favourite son in NZ will only get him so far .

Boxing is a sport where people will support you no matter what country you are from if you appeal to them .

That is true but I do recall the country being at a stand still when our very own David Tua got his shot at Lennox Lewis. Some big bandwagon jumpers that day that we're seeing with Lydia Ko nowadays.

We caught the Euro star to watch us play Fance in Paris. Spent a couple of hours after the game trying to find a french pub that would show the fight. Finally found one.

Was gutted when he lost.

I dunno, I think NZers are genuinely interested in seeing Kiwis do well (some if only to chop them down if they fail) at almost anything, I'm not into boxing, but me and a group of mates got together to watch the Tua-Lennox fight.

Kiwis will get behind Joseph , but my point is he may need a bigger support base .

id be trying to promote him in Australia as well for starters. Aussie fight fans would support him no problem , like they are doing with Mark Hunt, he is very popular here.

No need to do that ~ I'm pretty sure the Aussies will start doing that themselves ~"Australasian boxer Joseph Parker wins his fight".

I do hear ya but social media makes things easy for bandwagon jumpers. People who wouldn't know a putter from a driver inanely sharing on facebook how proud they are of Lydia Ko winning and how awesome it is to be a kiwi. Mind you the absolute peak of this horrific behaviour is during the Americas Cup especially if they're up against anyone remotely Australian....

Resurrecting this old thread as no one seems to have a new one running.

Ignoring the spread about clusterfuck of belts in the heavyweights at the moment (the filtering of these bouts will eventually bring them back together) whaddayareckon? Is JP going to claim his first world title?

Considering stumping up to watch this (around £10 on BoxNation in the UK) depending on what I am doing at the time.

    A good read here..

Southside warrior: Four months inside Team Joseph Parker

Lupesoliai La'auli Joseph Parker is the greatest boxing hope New Zealand and Samoa have produced since David Tua. But can he win a world championship title? Don Rowe spent four months embedded in Parker’s inner circle as he prepared for the most important fight of his career so far.

I think he will win , Joe is the much better athlete , but Ruiz is cagey so needs to be careful , has a few clever tricks , has a few nice in close combinations, and throws an over hand right that looks a bit dodgy the way he follows through with the elbow,

Ruiz is an unusual fighter, mexican fighters are legendary, but not as heavyweights , hence the less than impressive build, but he is mexican drilled , he is ring smart and has surprising hand speed.

For kiwis in Aus, its free on foxtel ,pay per view in NZ, bonus for us .

Parker has to replicate the tactics Lewis used against Tua - use his jab as a weapon to keep the distance. JP won't want to allow Ruiz inside and make this fight into a brawl.
