Amen. Saw the ref the other day was Barnes and thought “bugger”

I realise the levels of angst toward Barnes are (unreasonably) high among Kiwi fans, but he's actually about the best ref going around at the moment.

his communication is very clear and doesn't seem to get rattled often, but in 2007 he really should have gone to Refsavers.

That incident, along with underarm, is the Double Penetration with no lube in the Niu Zulland Sporting Book Of Grudges.

Forget the other 79 minutes where the ABs didn't play better than France 🤣

…..or the fact that McKechnie had Bob Hope and no hope of hitting a six off the last ball.

If there was no hope at all one questions the tactical decision made to bowl it underarm. And I believe/recall he needed a 6 to even tie?

Yep. It’s embarrassing that people were as pissed off as they were and even more so that it’s still talked about today.

Seriously? We fucked up their shit no end for the entire match, but his inexperience and objective bias screwed us. And it wasn't just the forward pass.

He cost us over 20 points and we lost by two.

All Black haters gunna hate though.

Nup. Still illustrative of the gutlessness of the Australian "sportsman".

Don't forget Greg Chappell disputing that Martin Sneddon had caught him out during the Australian innings.

If you want to be really picky, Hadlees inability to convince the umpires to give any LBW decision unless it was a Chappell bowling outside leg is probably up there as well.

All in one game where teh underarm incident was just the icing on the final ball.

But it also taught McCaw and the All Blacks that they had to take the ref out of the game as much as possible and that likely resulted in many of the records set over the remainder of McCaws career. Would you re-write the 2007 RWC if it resulted in a very different 8 years post-RWC 2007?

Maybe it made Wayne Barnes a better ref as well - while he doesn't get everything right, he will often apologise or explain if he thinks he has made a mistake and he has at least a "feel" for the game compared to his English compatriots.

I don't consider being genial while making error after error constitutes a good referee.
