Could have been uglier if Dearden stopped dropping in short to Su'a and just went straight to Cobbo/Hammer a couple of times.

Yeah awful tackle - took 2 players out for the game - including perhaps the most exciting player on the field in Walsh.

Massive defence by the Blues gave them a chance, but their attack couldn't manufacture any scores. Now QLD out the game away

OK that was very nicely done.

Despite the score and down to 12 men there are large parts of this game where NSW looked the better team.

Unfortunately for them they now have to win at Suncorp to win the series.

The thing that bugs me, is a lot of the comments focus on the fact it was a ‘massive call in a big game like that’

How big of a game it is shouldn’t even come into it, if it’s worthy of a send off, it’s a send off, simple.

Stupid high shot. The player let his team mates down badly and got the marching orders his actions deserved. No sympathy.

@Gunner That's typical of the dated attitude of channel 9 who still think it's 1985. They're always pushing the 'nothing in it' call led by Gus, Joey Johns and Fatty, 3 dinosaurs.

I had half an eye on the game at work so I was watching it with a bunch of Qlders. I was surprised at how many were pissed that the game was ruined by the send off. Surprised in that those who support the team that benefits from a sending off/sin bin are normally quite happy with the decision. Neutrals were grumpy too, including me.

With the plethora of yellow cards and red cards in Union I reckon I am feeling a card fatigue. I am sick of the feeling of frustration every time a team is down a player. I know this will probably never happen because the notion of a team having to be a player down is so ingrained in our psyches, but if we are going to send off/bin players regularly in the name of player safety, perhaps we should follow the lead of basketball and have players 'ejected' but teams allow teams to remain at full strength on the field. I know we made a step in that direction with the '20 minute red' or what ever it is, but I don't think it goes far enough.

I've got an interest in sualii as he's at the Tahs next year.

And I refrained from making any derisive remarks about the game in general.

It's a little more difficult to hit someone around the waist when they drop substantially in the last step. If I was defence counsel I'd certainly be pointing this out. Also that midgets should take responsibility for being short...

But kudos to the referee (which isn't something I say in NRL) for having the balls to send him in a SoO.

For anyone that missed the tackle last night you can watch it below, pretty much launch himself at Walsh's head.

Incoming Wallabies star Joseph Sua'ali'i sent off in Origin 1 after 7mins after knocking out Reece Walsh with a shocking shoulder to the head.

Classic league commentators saying 'it might be a card' and then being shocked when he gets sent off. That's why I don't watch league much, bunch of morons don't protect their athletes. That was a fking shocking tackle.

correct me if i am wrong here, but the offending player was sent off, in the 8th minute, of the 2nd biggest game of the year? That happened right? So the game took steps to punish a player for sparking out one of their athletes?

It was a tackle that was too hard to ignore but the response from the commentators and the players said it all really. League is renowned for letting bad tackles slide and allowing players to carry on playing when they are clearly in distress. Kudos to the officiating team last night for acting accordingly, it needs to happen more often.

You only have to go back to the Warriors and Roosters game earlier in the year and one player was stumbling around for a good couple mins after being concussed, a doctor didn't even come on to check him, and he carried on playing for the remainder of the game. It's an area league clearly needs to do better at instead of the 'man up' mentality that infiltrates that game to it's core.

For a game that had a final margin of 30+ points, and was 13-on-12 for 72 minutes, that was a pretty good watch.

NSW started on fire, and then Qld score with their first opportunity. Red card happens, but what people don't seem to be commenting on is, that hit didn't stop a huge linebreak, that right edge of NSW was in for a long night no matter what.

Then NSW were down a centre which is fatal for your edge defense whether he is replaced or not (as shown at NRL level repeatedly this year) and Qld ruthlessly exploited it. Being a man short AND having a guy like Deardon dragging in defenders with foot speed means Cobbo and Hammer were running in to huge holes. Bang bang and it's 20 early points.

At that point Qld switched off and NSW actually switched on, and for the next 40 minutes they were the better side. They had all teh energy, all the linespeed, all the aggression. And all Qld could do was truck it out of their own end, and get forced in to errors.
NSW runs out of energy, and a Qld team picked to be dangerous at the back end was exactly that.

I am really keen for game 2, and what changes are made. I think Qld are a big middle short. NSW need a halfback (Moses) and a fullback (literally anyone other than Squid James who spent the night proving why he was dropped in the first place). For NSW their bench was really good, Leniu and Olakuato added heaps. I am not sure Yeo works at Origin level though.

For Qld, the guys who stood up when it was dicey were the veterans. DCE is a fucking Qld immortal. What a player he has grown in to. And he's genuinely one of the league's good guys. Ben Hunt is so good when his teammates aren't complete spuds.

I think NSW will be heartened by so much of last night though

That's why I don't watch league much, bunch of morons don't protect their athletes

correct me if i am wrong here, but the offending player was sent off, in the 8th minute, of the 2nd biggest game of the year? That happened right? So the game took steps to punish a player for sparking out one of their athletes?

Just checking, as a league watching moron.
