Auckland stadiums - Eden Park, Western Springs etc

The Eden Park 2.0 concept includes a new North Stand, upgraded East and West stands, a retractable roof, a field able to be used for both rectangle and oval sporting codes, and variable seating capacities.
I used to sit by some engineers that worked on some EP designs. It sounded like that had multiple different plans depending on the budget etc. Hopefully they have some other designs for if the cricket moved
A lot of the 2.0 plans seem over the top. A roof..
Interestingly they kept talking about doing a quick build for FIFA ladies world cup. Claimed they had a promise of gov funding to do the West stand at least. The thinking was that the East and West stand get done first to prevent sound leakage and they'll have more concerts. They were also trying to get money to for the North stand rebuild
I presume covid ended that possibility and some of this stuff made its way into the 2.0 plan
If Eden park 2.0 gets approved, it really needs to be given the money for the full 2.0 plans.
It will be cheaper than a completely new stadium and still provide a world class facility.
Make a decision now because in 12 months time it will have cost them 10’s of millions more in increased costs.

As said before, the only stadium proposals able to get a big number of tenants are the waterfront proposals. The Warriors will never move to Eden Park. Auckland FC owner is prepared to put in money for a waterfront stadium.
- All Blacks
- Blues
- Auckland NPC
- Blues Women
- Warriors
- Warriors NRLW
- Auckland FC
The proposals also have options for lower capacity configurations.
Anyway, the crowds would only come if the offering at the stadium was superior to that of the TV at home.
Easier to get to
Dining precincts nearby
Roof
Nice bars and lounges around the stadium
Children’s playground and parenting facilities (hell I’d try and get one of those kids playground companies to be one of the tenants at the stadium like Bounce or Chipmunks).Given its location, the sunken stadium option would really be a big retail and dining mall during the week as the stadiums restaurants and fast food joints would be open 7 days a week. It’ll resemble the eateries under the Opera House in Sydney but with the big steps down to the water acting as covered outdoor dining areas with views to the harbour.

i kind of feel they would want too develop the land to offset the cost of a new stadium

Yup. That's a lot of very expensive housing land right there

If a new stadium was built in the city, could there be an option to turn Eden Park into a proper cricket ground?

It's the wrong shape. If they are intent on killing Western Springs for speedway, it is oval, with banked sides. Not sure if it's big enough though

It floods. I think that's the biggest issue

Quay Park or Eden Ver2 versus BAU, about what I thought
-
The other two were joke contenders.
Stuff with a scoop eh? EP to get a rook!!
I don't think a roof can be justified. Weather is a great leveler in sport. How teams adjust to conditions is part of the game.
Yeah it might be of use for a few concerts but at what cost?

i actually dont believe they take things like that into consideration, its all about the crowds and if a roof will get more people in the door

I don't think it will.
I've been to EP a lot over the years. It doesn't have heavy rain all that often.
I think the roof is a vanity thing. Keeping up with all the others.
Dunedin Chch yeah. Can be fucking cold at night Akl - not so much

@dogmeat a roof seems like a waste of money to me. None of the notable Aussie stadia have them
@canefan Marvel has a roof so thats 4-5 of the AFL teams, even the AB's played under the roof 2 years ago
-
@gt12 agree, if they insist on playing games at night in the middle of winter then a roof makes it so much more family friendly
