    This Saturday:

    Hurricanes Top 4 Semi-Finals
Napier BHS v St Pat's Town, played at NBHS with kick-off at 12.30pm
St Pat's Silverstream v Hastings BHS, played at Porirua Park #1 with kick-off at 12.30pm

The Battle for the Soul of the Canes. I think I'll even support NBHS in this week. 😉

Hopefully HBHS can turn around their earlier defeat, it was reasonably close so not insurmountable and they've come off an ok Super 8.

I hope to make the trek out to Porirua and will do the "honourable" thing by and try to support your outfit, albeit through clenched teeth.

Not sure if the results have been posted elsewhere but at Porirua Park Hastings Boys' High School downed the previously undefeated Wellington Champions Saint Patricks College by thirty one points to fourteen.
There was no luck or anything involved as right from the outset HBHS had possession and were in for a converted try after about three minutes without the SPC team getting their mits onto the ball. The red headed loosehead prop, appropriately referred to as Big Red, made some powerful surges giving HBHS the all important psychological advantage that dominant front foot ball gives.
SPC did have a bit of possession and made several powerful surges toward the HBHS line from the restart but eventually captain Liam Udy-Jones took possession and broke the first tackle and surged forward at great pace before kicking ahead sending the ball down to just short of the SPC goal line before the advancing HBHS players caught the defender that tried to run it back. From then on until halftime HBHS had the upper hand and added another two tries and a conversion to turn round to face the wind leading 19 - 0
SPC got over for a converted try earlyish in the second half with HBHS responding about ten minutes later. SPC then got a second try to get to 14 - 24 but HBHS always looked the more dangerous, especially out wide with a couple of speedy wingers, one with a nice step and swerve, always looking to be a try scoring prospect whenever they got their hands on the ball.

Nothing SPC tried seemed to work with too much individualistic charges not returning dividends thanks to some solid HBHS tackling and when they did give the ball a run their backs seemed to be a step below their HBHS counterparts.
Despite being physically smaller the HBHS team were certainly deserving winners, no arguments about that. Apart from Udy-Jones and the loosehead prop the guy filling in at first five looked to be a player of skill and talent, Someone told me he was the normal halfback but was filling in at 10 due to injury. The tighthead prop came into his own in the second half with some nice prop like surges whilst one of the locks (No 5????) also had a couple of runs that invariably broke tackles and the tackling overall from HBHS was solid and assured, helping them in their pursuit towards victory. SPC did miss a number of tackles which did not help them, but I did not care about that!
All in all well done HBHS, next week will be a big challenge for them with not only Hurricanes supremacy at stake but also HB supremacy.

@higgins Yeah, it was a great day for HB school rugby:

            Hurricanes Semi Finals
Hastings BHS 31 v St Pats Silverstream 14
Napier BHS 31 v St Pats Town 14

It will be an all Hawke's Bay Hurricanes Final and we'll have a HB school in the Top 4 to rep the Hurricanes region!

              HBT write-up. About the venue:

Originally the Hurricanes final was scheduled for Palmerston North but Bird said there is a chance it could be played in Hawke's Bay. The venue is expected to be confirmed on Monday.

From the Napier BHS Facebook page

                  All Hawke’s Bay Hurricanes Final

Napier Boys’ High to play Hastings Boys’ High in the the Hurricanes final after both teams beat their Wellington opposition with identical scores 31-14.

The final was to be played in Palmerston North but with both teams from Hawke’s Bay it has been negotiated to play this here in the Bay.

Thanks to Hawke’s Bay Rugby and Napier City Council we have been given the go ahead to play this on McLean Park this Saturday kick off at 12.00pm.

@higgins Haha, still 0 - 0, but Napier just spent quite a while at 5m from the Hastings try line, without scoring.

Hastings defending well so far, but their line-out needs to improve.

Napier could have been at least 6 points ahead if they had decided to kick at goal instead of going for the line-out. Another opportunity missed. Hastings defence still holding.

After 17 minutes, Napier have scored an unconverted try. I couldn't see who scored and the commentators didn't name the try scorer.

                                Napier leads 5 - 0.

Penalty goal Napier after 23 minutes. Then a run-away try from Hastings left winger Michael Naitokani, against the run of play.

                                  It's 8 - 5 to Napier after 30 minutes.

Hastings playing football instead of rugby and they score again! I think the same left winger, but he didn't do it alone.

                                    Half time: Napier 8 - 10 Hastings

Napier looking the stronger team, but not able to convert opportunities into points due to a good Hastings defence.
Both Hastings tries were against the run of play, but they're grabbing their chances and that's how they've earned their lead.

The quality of the stream is excellent, but the commentators are talking too much.

Try to Napier centre Leo Thompson. Finally they're able to get through that stubborn Hastings defence.

Keegan Christian-Goss has converted the try.

Napier takes back the lead 15 to 10.
