@canefan While 6th form cert was quite a clusterfuck, there was nothing wrong with School C or Bursary. NCEA is what happens when the inmates run the asylum.
On a side note, apparently the Novapay system is still not fixed, and heaps of teachers haven't been paid. What an absolute dog of a system. Heads should have rolled over that, and Talent2 shouldn't have received a fucking cent.

Aside from 50% failing those @Mokey. School C got scaled and so did 7th form. Those were set up to funnel approx half to academic type routes, with trades, vocational and less skilled options for the rest.
NCEA is off track a bit at the moment imo, but the underlying thinking is that everyone needs a higher level of base skills plus their chosen areas/specializations. And for all people touting the previous school system, we still have hundreds of thousands of people who went through it and came out without those core skills... now they're in the workforce (Or not) and posing a big education challenge.

@Paekakboyz Yeah, I don't think it's as simple as it's being made out. The stuff said about the "nephew" (watching Sports etc) could be applied to my generation as well.
My niece has just finished 5th form equivalent and the standard of schoolwork she does is much higher than what I did. She's going to be much better prepared for university than I was back in the mid 90s.
@mokey You could pass subjects in Bursary by rote learning, which doesn't really set you up for higher education.

aye? That's exactly how you pass uni! Even law degrees are basically 4 years of remembering trials.
Unless you are talking social sciences. Which doesn't set you up for real life...

My son just finished fifth form , they pick and choose their classes like I imagine uni students do, he was giving me a breakdown on what he wanted to do and explaining that he could merit in one course but only achieved in another so he’d have to work harder to get the credits he wanted. He ended up only having two exams at the end of the year instead of the six I had which I think is a good thing.
Seemed like a good system, there’s always people who figure out how to game them though. -

That is not being a prick. It's informative, and a young apprentice should be open to new concepts that broaden / change their mind as you see fit as the employer.

@canefan seriously though, how often are you in a situation where you need to know a calculation, fact, how to do something, check with a co-worker/peer or anything really and everyone around you is not allowed to talk to you, nor are you allowed to ask Uncle Google or consult a handbook/instructions etc
BTW, I passed all the exams I sat form School C onwards, I just hate them!

Not very often for most people - but in time critical jobs, all of the things that you mention can cost lives. Pilots, surgeons, police, firefighters, etc. They need immediate knowledge, no time to google "how do I land this thing when the wheels won't come down?" Admittedly discussion might be allowed, but someone has to know. It's not always possible, with pilots and emergency services anyway.

@snowy appreciate that, but how often will you not have a co-pilot, or have your computers to assist etc...yes there are always situations where you are required to make a decision, but in many situations you still have a colleague or peer to at least try to offload blame...surgeons are surrounded by a team, ultimately the buck stops with them, but if a nurse sees him/her doing somethign not quite right, they will (or should) question it, firefighters will often do things in pairs or teams, so again always someone to with you to before you make a decision that could result in loss of life.
People who become surgeons, pilots are often fairly high up in thier field anyway, people like cops and fire fighters are special kinds of people as well.
Yes there are exceptions, but I just feel that exams are nothing like the majority of situations the majority of people find themselves in.

I'll only comment on the pilot comments. Yes you will have a co pilot who blames the Captain - who does the Captain blame?
Communication in time critical situations is erratic at best. Ever used an oxygen mask and intercom at the same time in a smoke filled cockpit? It's two blind Darth Vaders in a seriously stressful situation trying to fix things in a team environment where you can't actually get that much through to each other.You both need to know your shit and be able to do it. To prove it you need to sit exams.

@snowy ha, yes, but again, how often...how many of those scenarios play out vs how many times every thing is awesome
and you also learn from these situations.As I said, I get where you are coming from, but feel is is only applicable to a small % of people and situations, and even then, some people who might have a photographic memory and get 100% in every exam might simply panic in situations as you describe.

@canefan not saying you dont have to work for your results, quals, to make the team or whatever, just a one off exam is rarely a reflection of someones true ability (one poor game/throw/ride/swim etc is not a reflection of a poor sportsperson)
sure there are certain fields and professions where exams are important to put people under pressure to rely on knowledge and instincts, but for the majority it is unrealistic
