    From an article on Stuff.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, could find it tough to hold on to lock Zach Gallagher who played for the All Blacks XV in 2022. It's understood a club in Japan is keen on Gallagher, who shifted to the Hurricanes this year from the Crusaders.

I'm surprised at such a young age, Gallagher is heading off. Shame, as he has been very good this year for the Canes. Could be a straight swap for Dearns maybe?

Can confirm that that is the case with Zach.

There is also a back who under contract that could be working to do something similar to what Sam Nock has just done. Similar to Steve, when I get more details and the ‘ok’ I’ll update in here.

Is it a permanent shift for Zach to Japan or just a one year gig? Big loss for NZ Rugby, he’s only 23 and has his best years ahead of him. Makes more sense that Plummer has signed through until 2027

This feels like the risk of bringing in an international - talent here might bolt.
For that reason, The tall Japan lad should have been at the Landers where they can't attract more than 3 locks anyway.

How do you know Zach hadn’t signed this deal before they signed Dearns?

Zach could have remained if he really wanted to, it’s not like the Canes are flush with international quality locks either.

It might also be a one year swap, but either way I can't see why an NZ team with reasonable locks needs to bring in a non eligible player on a one year deal.

Because like any business these sort of signings are what brings excitement and brings people through the turnstiles. The Canes have lost so much talent over the last 5 years - Beaudy, Ardie, Jordie on a sabbatical, amongst others so I don’t blame the Canes for going after a lock like Dearns who could be a bit of a cult hero type figure for the side, as well as being a tall lock which we’ve barely had over the years.

We’ve had many reasonable locks as you say but Dearns might/might not bring another dynamic to this side.

Footage of Aumua’s injury, surely he won’t be back.

I’m not sure on how long the contract is sorry but it doesn’t sound like it’s just a 1 year thing. I’ve been told he will be joining the same club as Mark Telea, Toyota Verblitz.

@Canes4life people would go quiet on it being a bad idea pretty quickly I imagine if it builds a championship winning side.

Surely that's why you make these signings right? It's a result driven business at the end of the day, the Canes will want to ensure they are competing at the business end of the comp, ideally with homefield advantage to bring in as much revenue as possible. Getting guys like Dearns is only going to help with that goal.

@Canes4life Hes either extremely optimistic about his development, playing the long game, or really enjoys being a squad member. Good on him

What’s his form like for the Naki? Shields will likely have one more year left in him. Flanders is the obvious incumbent and with Tuifua going to France it’s not a bad career move.
