Huh, I read that differently. Not that they were exactly happy to lose their father, but just relieved the father wasn't alive to see something he would have hated. Am I missing something?

    Yes

I saw this on Twitter today, and I thought it merited some discussion.

This says so much about Twitter, but also politics in general. To think that someone would be happy to lose their father because of his political persuasion is just mind-boggling.

    0_1535944335977_f7cec011-5fd4-46e6-9e72-f6380b53793d-image.png

But more than that, it is a prime example of the deluded Boomers that seem to be flocking to Twitter. They tweet millions of times, always frothing about the politics of the day.

In reality, federal politics barely touches my life. It barely touches anyone's life, really. To make it an obsession, as so many of these people do, is so unhealthy and sad. I wonder if this all existed before Twitter and these bored old people just wrote letters to the editor or something, but I can't help thinking that social media has made it all worse.

Go outside for fuck's sake, take up a hobby. When I see tweets like the above (which I do regularly) my overwhelming feeling is pity.

I agree, there are a lot of people that seem utterly addicted to political Twitter and just live in there, becoming more and more detached from reality. I enjoy the political discussions, but it's important to remember that a lot of these political commentators overplay everything to suit their narrative. If something controversial happens on Twitter, you can bet next to nobody in real life knows or cares about it despite it appearing to be a big deal there. The political discussions on there are insanely polarized - the anonymity of people's accounts adds to that as people feel they can say whatever they want without consequences.

It’s bizarre how they think it’s the real world, the latest insanity I’ve noticed is terfblockers

How utterly fucked in the head do you have to be to go on some weird political rant when talking about the loss of your father and your first father's day without him. I'll bet the eulogy was a doozy.

    No.
    That's exactly what it was.
Not a ”rant”, but a misguided and inappropriate use of her father's death in a (probably ”yet another”) political comment.

And the notion that her father would rather be dead than witness Scott Morrison as Prime Minister.

Which is just so patently absurd. Sure the man's no Roosevelt, but he's a fairly middle-of-the-road pollie who will deliver a fairly middle-of-the-road performance before losing at the next election to another middle-of-the-road pollie.

If he was marching people off to death camps then I could maybe understand. But to yearn for death just because of this one fairly inoffensive man is profoundly bizarre.

Serena Williams gate has proven beyond all doubt that it’s now just a platform for the anti white male brigade to shout their views and get a few likes / retweets to reinforce their own racist and sexist views.

As an entity it’s truly quite biased. There is little objectivity and reason.

Society simply won’t move forward until the truly savvy start looking at racist / sexist views / laws and commence acting on them.

Woman and ppl aren’t white aren’t above law.

I thought it was the safe space for single purple haired fatties? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

There are some certified nutjobs on there spouting all sorts of insane shit, and worryingly getting lots of likes and retweets. Twitter provides the data to back up some of George Carlin's best quotes:

"Think about how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of 'em are stupider than that."

"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."

"Sensible people" are a drag. On ideas, innovation, fun, basically anything that doesn't fit inside their myopic little "common sense" parameters.

You're confusing sensible with reasonable, to channel George Bernard Shaw

Helen Clark’s husband puts up some interesting stuff on twitter, I think Ardern would prefer that he stopped pointing out free tertiary education only helps wealthier kids though
