A no look pass 5m from your own line.

        I'm still laughing.

Great contest well done the chiefs
Big ups to the Brumbies you know you have a competitive comp when Games are coming down to 50/50 calls ,a missed opportunity here or there and nailing your goalkicking

                Credit where it's due:

Brumbies are a talented and niggly cheating side. Not the start they wanted to the season but they'll go deep.

Chiefs look like the real deal early on.

Pretty sure the Chiefs rested a fair few players for this game. Chiefs surely must now be the pacesetters.

Dissenters will say Super Rugby has no defence, but how the fuck do you defend against some of this stuff?

Both sides running out of numbers just through fast ball movement.

The Northern Hemisphere mind cannot comprehend such attack.

Brumbies just keep seeming to have an extra man out wide. Seems Chiefs having a hard time numbering up.

Just watched the game and this was quite noticeable. The Brumbies are, at times, using double backdoor pods in attack, which can create easy overlaps in the backline. It's a system used by quite a few teams. Taranaki, through their attack coach Brad Cooper, have used it to good effect. He also employed it with the NZ U20s last season.

You can recognize it pretty easily when you see attack lining up in a so-called "stack formation", creating extra options out wide.

                                    Example from game against Drua

Typical is that the wings come in-field to act as extra passing options, in order to outnumber the defence.

I suppose what is surprising to me is that it took the Chiefs so long to find defensive solutions for it. What you want to do against this attack is launch defenders into those backdoor options. When the Chiefs finally started doing that - in the 80th minute - ALB scored that turnover try.

@Mauss exactly - flood their options channels and they either have to keep the ball, or inevitably make a blind pass you can intercept.

The benefit then is they're horribly compromised in defence. Extremely difficult to transition, but the Brumbies benefit from having genuine pace in their back three.

@antipodean said in Chiefs v Brumbies:

exactly - flood their options channels and they either have to keep the ball, or inevitably make a blind pass you can intercept.

The benefit then is they're horribly compromised in defence. Extremely difficult to transition, but the Brumbies benefit from having genuine pace in their back three.

It does look like the Brumbies have good scramble defence, with their quick back three like you say, as well as a quick loose forward trio, with players like Reimer, Scott and Cale. Even when the Chiefs broke the line, the Brumbies were able to reorganize pretty well. It's more their defensive structure which seems to be causing issues.

They're also using the double backdoor pods selectively, mostly from set-piece situations or turnover ball. So their attack has looked pretty good but their defence has lost them a few games already.
