NZR say no to ANZAC day tests.
-
Have to say I am real pleased they canning this idea. Just a personal thing for me, but I believe ANZAC day means to much too country to turn it into a commercial opportunity. Seems to be something that is more of an Aussie idea , used to hear it discussed now and then at rugby clubs in Aussie, have never heard same here in NZ. Not saying some kiwis not for it, just not as much support for it here.
-
I definitely wouldn't push the idea because ANAZAC day is obviously pretty sacred
in saying that, yes, ANZAC day seems a much bigger day in general over here. My club does a breakfast bbq for after dawn service and then a presentation on the history of the club and its members that served. some of the old mates come down and are open about it being one of the few times a year they get out and see their old friends. then a lot of people migrate to the pub or RSA looking for games of 2-up (still dont understand it) before watching the ANZAC day games (afl or NRL)....its a full day out and often actually spending time with returned service people
obviously poeple can go and do this stuff on their own, but having events arrange does make it easier i feel
-
Good. Nothing other than a blatant cash grab by a destitute Union.
-
I don't have a problem with the idea, as (same as shops) they can open after lunch. The morning/dawn is the remembrance time, and a game in the afternoon would be fine. But ANZAC doesn't fit in with the season, taking ABs out for two SR rounds would be shit.
A fix would be to give SR a proper season length, and except at certain times there are no internationals. Proper longer season with full home and away as well as knock outs maybe and get the balancing factor of teams that are stacked playing without them - and more opportunities for wider TG players
-
NZR ideas end in creating committees with no change and instead make great investments in NFTs by the way, just a fucking great idea.
We should be looking at making money where we can in the core business. This looks like a blatant cash grab as antipodean suggests, however this has proven very successful across other codes who are making money from this (and of course pretending to show their support for the cause).
I agree with Matchpants the better version of this would be to keep it in super rugby rather than breaking the comp, line up NZ vs AUS matches and have them played after midday.
But dont mind any idea to make money in your core business of rugby. This is a business after all. -
Well if you read, the $s aren't adding up that great for NZR anyway. All the big money comes from playing in Aus cities, who will pay RA for the rights,
And I am stuffed (apart from anything else) if I want another test against Wallabies. Geez I prefer 1 less!!! -
Aren't Bledisloe fixtures sold out anyway? The point being there's no pressing requirement to schedule this on a specific day to drum up interest. What am I missing here?

nothing except the ARU feeling left out by the NRL and AFL

Bledisloe's don't sell out in Australia. Not in Sydney, anyway.
Yeah, that big ass stadium in Sydney always has plenty of space.
Sold out (essentially) the others in recent years.
-
I think the general view from Australia is the Bledisloe has gotten a bit stale. And before you start shouting, yes that's entirely because our team isn't very good. Nobody denies that.
So RA are looking to give it a fresh coat of paint. Putting it on Anzac Day would be a way of doing that - different time, different feel, putting the game in a slightly different emotional and seasonal context.
I don't feel strongly either way on it, I don't think anyone really does here. Might be nice to try but we've all got more important things to be focussed on (namely the Tahs march to the Super title).

thats kind of what i was thinking, definitely not championing the idea, a little surprised at the "money grab" critiques....yeah....i think everyone acknowledges that.....a money making business proposed an idea that might make more money for them

and a significant cash injection from WA.
Still think the Super Rugby method is the better way to trial this, keeps it more tribal but still allows to not miss out on this cash cow in Australia, proven via other codes
-
It's still easily the highest ranking rugby game in Australia and if you win a couple that will change very quickly. I don't think it needs Anzac day.
Super rugby does. The trans Ta$man aspect is easier to run, provides an opportunity for special jerseys etc. and can strengthen the competition that needs the most help.

An ANZAC Day with five games... two afternoon kickoffs in NZ/Fiji, a night game in NZ/Afternoon in Australia + Two night games in Aussie.
-
ironically might have been good for super round, host some brunches after dawn service...then play three back to back games NZ v Aussie/Drua
would need to actually commit though, treat it like a test, marching bands, fly byes, the teams all go to dawn service
-
I not all that chuffed with super round , but can understand that's maybe because I in NZ and they never going to have them here anyway.
Look any ANZAC tests would be in Aus, but not why I not comfortable with them. But honestly see why it stacks up well for RA, and not NZR anyway, so works for me just not having them at all.
I tell you what I would support maybe, a proper ANZAC game, where the game is actually played by ANZACS (the armed forces)
