NEARLY half of the Fiji secondary schoolboys under-18 team members have been approached by overseas clubs and schools after their three games in New Zealand.
The side finally arrived home safely on Tuesday night after their flight diverted to Samoa then to Vanuatu upon their return from New Zealand on Monday. The diversion of flight was due to the bad weather conditionS.
Though the side lost all their matches against Australia, New Zealand and the New Zealand Barbarians some of these students have been offered rugby scholarships to study and play in New Zealand.
Three standout players confirmed to be offered rugby scholarship are Marist Brothers High School prop Kaliopasi Uluilakepa, QVS captain Kinivuai Veitata and hard hitting QVS centre Timoci Tavatavanawai.
Hopefully they take full advantage of the opportunities and some of them end up playing for Fiji.

Kaliopasi Uluilakepa is in the NZ U20s Oceania tournament team at the moment.

I have to say, I don't understand how he is eligible for an NZ team yet, if less than 3 years ago he was not yet even resident in NZ? At the risk of highlighting it and scuppering his prospects.
It reads, in the original 2016 article, like he was offered a school scholarship, but it appears he was recruited by the Wellington Academy. So would have been at the end of his schooling. Although the 'scholarship' part, if not just mis-reported, may well have included some tertiary training or something as part of the Wellington Academy deal.
Hope the NZRU have done their due-diligence.
I'm hoping he takes full advantage of Wellington academy system to become a top prop for Fiji, they need guys in that position.

(The Fiji Times): Fiji could be breeding another Tongan rugby player who wants to represent Fiji rather than his home country Tonga.Kaliopasi Uluilakepa is part of the Fiji schoolboys team that leaves today for New Zealand, a place where he was born in 18 years ago.
Uluilakepa is a student at Marist Brothers High School in Suva and was part of the school’s U18 team that lost to Queen Victoria in the 2016 Deans Trophy final.
After he was born in NZ Uluilakepa returned to Tonga and was brought up in the Friendly Isles before his father Sione Uluilakepa was transferred to Fiji to be at the Diocese of Polynesia, Moana Ministry Educator in 2014.
“My father had to move to the main office of the church, so that’s why I am here following my father. I was raised in Tonga and only in 2014 I came to Fiji and studied at Marist Brothers High School. It’s been three years now in Fiji,” Uluilakepa said.
Today as he travels with the Fiji schoolboys, he won’t see himself as being a Tongan, rather being a Fijian with hopes to don the white jumper with the coconut tree emblem one day.
He previously had eyes for the All Blacks jersey, but that has changed.
“For me, it’s an honour to play for Fiji because ever since I came, Fiji has helped me in many ways. There are plenty opportunities to go overseas here and Fiji also make use of the talent God has given me. I guess playing for Fiji is one of the best opportunities that I have got. I play prop. The most important lesson I have learned is love and brotherhood. It started when I entered Marist Brothers High School. They always say ‘I am my brother’s keeper and I have used that to bring that to the Fiji team..
“To be honest I would like to play for Fiji. I always wanted to play for the All Blacks, but since they have already won the World Cup many times, I always made a goal to play for a Pacific Island team to win the World Cup and to create history,” Uluilakepa said.
well, retract almost all of the above, 3 years resident in Fiji. It still would be good if he wanted to represent Fiji in the future, as Tonga have world-class Tonga-eligible props coming out of every orifice.

Sounds like he's gone back to the honour of wanting to represent the ABs over Fiji. I also struggle to believe he really wanted to play for Fiji over Tonga after living there for three years, but I guess he can feel how he likes.
