Counties Manukau PIC Steelers 2017 Squad Announced
Coaches Darryl Suasua, Grant Henson and Semo Sititi have named their team with a blend of popular long-serving Steelers, new local talent, brothers, Super Rugby players and internationals.
The Counties Manukau squad features 23 players who have previously been part of the Steelers environment and seven new additions. Thirteen players have Super Rugby experience and 10 have earned international honours.
Young rookies to the PIC Steelers family include McNamara Cup winning halfback Liam Daniela from Bombay, Waiuku speedster winger Tevita Nabura and Pukekohe midfielder Salimoni Tukinia. At 20 years of age, Junior World Cup champion Orbyn ‘Go the Fro’ Leger, whose father Gus also played for the Steelers, is the youngest player in the team.
Also joining the side this year is Maori All Black Joe Royal who has spent part of the Super Rugby season training with the Blues, and Brumbies midfielder Nigel Ah Wong who scored the Brumbies only try against the Chiefs in their last New Zealand outing.
South Auckland born Samoan international Albert Nikoro formerly from the Western Force, has joined the Steelers for the first time, having been sidelines since receiving an eye injury against the All Blacks earlier in the year. All Blacks captain Kieran Read will be welcomed back home to ECOLight Stadium on Friday August 11 when Read’s two teams play each other in the Game of Three Halves.
Brothers Nepo and Luteru Laulala are expected to take the field together for the first time for the Steelers to add to the collection of brothers who have represented Counties Manukau.
The PIC Steelers will be again led by two born-and-bred Counties players. Augustine Pulu is the highest capped Steelers player in the squad and freshly back from a strong season for the Blues, joining with his Super Rugby teammate Jimmy Tupou, who welcomed a new son in late July. Tupou is on target to join a special group Steelers to have played 50 matches in the red, black and white jersey when the Steelers host Auckland in their opening Mitre 10 Cup game at ECOLight Stadium on Saturday night 19 August.
Steelers Head Coach Darryl Suasua said “It is great to have retained a core group of passionate Steelers while being able to blood-in new players. The Mitre 10 Cup is the springboard for many careers, so we are excited at the prospect of introducing our new players to this level of rugby while being surrounded by experienced players.”
It is expected that Toni Pulu and Sione Fifita, who both experienced long term injuries whilst on contract with the Chiefs and Crusaders respectively, will spend the Mitre 10 Cup season recovering. Due to Super Rugby commitments, some temporary extra players have been bought in as cover and will also be used as injury cover should the need arise.

Initially I would start Hickey and give Milo-Harris plenty of time from the bench.
No point investing in Fukofuka any more. He hasn't improved much and now he has played for Tonga I suspect he'll leave after his current contract

I wonder who the captain is? I'd be inclined to think Alex Ainley - but, at his age, he won't be on the field for every minute of every game - maybe Taufua or Samu?

It's a smaller squad than last year - significant losses from last year (from memory) - Jesse MacDonald, Ross Geldenhuys, Shane Christie, Tevita Koloamatangi, Marty Banks, Kieran Fonotia, Caleb Makene - plus a couple who barely featured. Banks (especially) and Christie are serious losses.

Significant gains - Ti'i Paulo, Jordan Taufua, Will Jordan - plus some rookies I know little or nothing about - Coxon and Aumua. Paulo, Taufua and Jordan should be upgrades on MacDonald, Koloamatangi and Hunt (as a fullback).

The starting XV looks pretty strong, but if injuries bite in crucial positions we could be badly exposed - cover looks particularly thin at tighthead prop and first five. With a squad of only 28 it's hard to know who else is around to be called up.

We don't really have a specialist openside - I presume Samu will start there with Blackadder as cover.

Joass makes the team, but neither of the other Ta$man NZ sevens players - Knewstubb or Ng Shiu - are in there - but, maybe they have signed elsewhere?

Six new names in Canterbury Mitre 10 Cup squad
Six new players and one returning player have been named in the Canterbury squad for the 2017 season, at a national launch for the Mitre 10 Cup competition held in Auckland today.
Canterbury’s coaching group of Head Coach Glenn Delaney and assistants Joe Maddock and Nathan Mauger have added two new players in the forward pack and four in the backline, as the team comes together to prepare for next week’s season opener against Ta$man.
Delaney said it was important to be able to blood some young talent in the Mitre 10 Cup, and those selected brought a fresh approach and plenty of enthusiasm to the Canterbury side: “These young players have come through the academy system and were members of the Crusaders Knights team earlier this year. As coaches, it’s exciting to see the raw talent among this new group and we’re really looking forward to seeing them develop throughout the Mitre 10 Cup campaign.
“In the forwards, prop Jack Straker and loose forward Jonno Osborne join our squad for the first time in 2017. They made their debuts off the bench in our Ranfurly Shield match against Wanganui in June, having impressed the coaching group for their respective clubs this season”, Delaney said.
Brett Cameron, Caleb Makene, Josh McKay and Braydon Ennor have all been named as the new backs in the 39-man squad.
“Brett had an impressive debut against Wanganui, and really played himself in to contention for this squad off the back of that effort. He kicked seventeen points for us in that game and, at just 20 years of age has shown he has plenty of potential.
“Caleb was in our Wider Training Group in 2015 and 2016 and represented New Zealand in the Under 20s last year. He's had another impressive club season and has earned promotion to the full Mitre 10 Cup team.
“Josh McKay and Braydon Ennor were both members of the successful New Zealand Under 20 squad that won the World Championship in Georgia earlier this year. Josh proved his versatility when he slotted in at first-five for us against Mid Canterbury on Friday, despite playing most of his recent rugby as an outside back. He has pace to burn and thinks on his feet, so we’re really excited to unlock some of that potential this season.
“Braydon is another intelligent footballer who continues to go from strength to strength. He was a member of the Canterbury Wider Training Group in 2016 and his performances suggest to us that he’s ready to take that next step up to Mitre 10 Cup level”, Delaney said.
This season also sees the return of experienced midfielder Tim Bateman to the Canterbury squad. The 30 year-old first made his provincial debut in red and black back in 2006 and played for Wellington, the Hurricanes, and overseas in Japan before returning to join the Crusaders for the 2017 Super Rugby season.
“Tim will be a fantastic asset to our midfield this season. He returns with plenty of experience at provincial and Super Rugby level, but most important for us will be the leadership qualities he brings to this young backline.
“Luke Whitelock will lead our side again this year. This will be Luke’s third year as captain and as a group we really value his voice in the squad and his ability to lead by example. He’s had an immense Super Rugby campaign, but he’s looking forward to another season with Canterbury and we can’t wait to have him back in our environment”, Delaney said.
24 of the 39-man squad have Super Rugby experience, while 7 of those players will be part of the All Blacks team for the upcoming Investec Rugby Championship.
The Canterbury side travel to Nelson for their first match of the 2017 season, where they will face last year’s beaten Premiership finalists, Ta$man. Kick off for the match is scheduled for 7:35pm, Friday 18 August, from Trafalgar Park in Nelson.
Canterbury’s first home fixture will be the following week on Sunday 27 August, when they put the Ranfurly Shield on the line against Otago, 4:35pm at AMI Stadium in Christchurch.

Found the extract below in an Aussie newspaper about new Auckland loosie Jamason Fa'anana-Shultz. I wonder if this means he is signed for the Blues next year?
Southern Districts will have to do without the services of Jamason Fa’anana-Shultz for the rest of the season with the young star on the verge of making the step up to Super Rugby.
Fa’anana-Shultz, a former Queensland under-20s representative, was brought to Sydney by the NSW Waratahs as a development player at the start of the season.
The No.8 made an outstanding start to life in the Shute Shield as, while Souths struggled to find their best form, Fa’anana-Shultz starred.
The Waratahs decided against taking him on but two New Zealand-based Super Rugby clubs, believed to be the Hurricanes and the Blues, have swooped, with both the Wellington and Auckland-based clubs said to be keen on his services.
