RWC Final: All Blacks v Springboks
  • G Gunner

Well done Springboks, the more clinical team won.

Some of my thoughts on the game:

    1. All Blacks had plenty of opportunity to win that game, but were not good enough.

A couple of dud line outs early on, knock ons, forcing unnecessary 50/50 passes.

    1. The highly controversial calls all went against us.

The penalty which Barnes then said sorry, that wasn’t actually a penalty. That 3 points made a difference. The TMO gets involved and changes calls all the time, so why can’t a ref change his call in this instance, when he’s clearly fucked up.

The inconsistency in dishing out cards. How the fuck Cane got red and Kolisi didn’t is an absolute disgrace and a blight on the game.

    1. Boks slowing tactics. Again.

Something seriously needs to be done to put an end to these endless stoppages.

    1. The ABs ability to still be in with a chance to win after playing the majority of the game with only 14 men. I thought it was absolutely game over when the red card came. So that was bloody gutsy and admirable.

    2. The most obvious and costly thing for me, The ABs lack of composure when it mattered. Many times we got into the Bok red zone, and we forced a pass that didn’t need to be forced or dropped the ball, or fluffed a lineout.

    Fuck fuck fuck!

    What a fucking joke.

I couldn’t believe this was sighted in the first place and I’m absolutely stunned he got a holiday.

It’s only a matter of time before a big game (ie pool decider or a finals game) is decided on a red card due to minimal accidental contact with the head.

Rugby is heading down a very slippery slope, one that they won’t be able to climb back out of and it worries me.

You know what’s so pleasing about this performance for me?

When the Black Caps were the laughing stock of test cricket, we’d sometimes have a couple of sessions where we’d dominate a top team, say have them 5 or 6 down for bugger all. Then inevitably someone in the opposition team would save the day with a big tonne or a bag of wickets and we’d go back to being shit.

Man it pissed me off, those bloody good teams always had someone that would stand up and perform when required under pressure to steal the game away from us again.

Well guess what, the Black Caps are now that good team who can soak up the pressure of being dominated for periods, before someone always puts their hand up when the team needs them the most.

It’s certainly a golden age of NZ cricket, soak it up people.

My issue is the totally dominant Blues pack only gets 3 into the AB’s.

Bell and Perofeta, have not done a damn thing to justify selection.

The inconsistencies around red cards is appalling. A real blight on the game.

    Roigard x1000 better than Christie.

    Akira Ioane's big work ons:

Jackling. He's a big guy, but that's not an excuse. Gets the odd turnover for the Blues but gives away ruck penalties too. May lack confidence as well as skills there.

Link play. Not a traditional big six strength, but could up fitness and improve decision making to get involved more in support. First half of 2019 Super Rugby his link play was excellent, maybe lacks confidence or decision making of when to switch lines.

Decision making of when to stay on his lines and when to hit the ruck or link off his line. Does this very well late in the game, but could increase involvement in first 50 minutes by being able to pick when to get involved. That kind of decision making could be the difference between a very good player and a great player.

I thought after watching today his only work on for me is a huge nit pick, but I would've preferred to see him take those tries himself - extra pass makes room for a mistake and getting those tries himself maybe has an effect on the oppo"s head space too? Best game in black for me, although admittedly against a fairly ordinary Oz.

I agree with this, almost like he was showboating that the gams is too easy for him, look at how unselfish I am etc. Just run over that last defender!!

Poor old Akira can’t win can he.
Ah well, we can always go back to back Shannon Frizzell.

    Whatchu talking bout Willis?

He was fucking awesome. Best player on the paddock. Like Bones said, a huge bit pick, but just cos he was awesome doesn't mean we can't discuss work ons!

I don’t see learning to be a hungus prick as a valid work on, probably more the other way around.

Akira a couple of years ago probably would have steamrolled the last defender, ignoring the unmarked man outside him, and we’d have been saying ‘Akira needs to learn to pass’

I’d like to know when putting your team mate over for a freebie try became a no-no?

To me a simple catch and pass is far less risky than tucking and going yourself and potentially loosing the ball in the tackle, being tackled short of the line or being tackled into touch.

Some of you have lost the plot.

That shit show wasn’t DMacs fault, it’s a systematic fault.

Can’t blame our 10 for lack of decent game plan, especially when he’s getting shit slow ball.

Bottom line is we need some hard mongrel bastards in the forwards who love nothing more than steam rolling defenders.

This bloody Santner, why is he in the team?

120 odd runs and 3 late wickets to have NZ in the box seat. Pffffft, you’re gonna need to bring more than that to satisfy The Fern pal....

Let’s see if Foster learns from his poor substitution tactics tonight? I doubt it.

Jordie to the wing - total waste of a sub. He was poor as a starting winger, what made Foster think he’d add anything to that position off the bench?

Subbing Akira who was arguably our best forward, smacks of a pre-meditated plan. Grow some balls and sub Ardie if he’s the least effective of the loose trio.

Then putting most of the bench on within a few minutes, lost all our momentum.

Oh how spoilt were we when our bench would come on and tear teams apart in the last 20.

    sigh

That was a great test match.

Yes there were errors from both sides, but they both brought great intensity, some great attack and some crunching defence.

Clarke was great, after losing his starting spot a year or two back, has worked bloody hard at his game and come back a pretty complete winger.

Thought our midfield was excellent, hard straight running with a few subtle variations, kept the Boks guessing.

Overall our backline play flowed waaaay better than it has been, we actually saw our outside backs getting the ball in a bit of space.

Forwards fronted up against the hyped Boks forward pack and bomb squad.

We failed to take a couple of big opportunities late in the game, and the Boks got some fucking dodgy calls go their way, and in the end that was the difference.

On another day we’d be talking about one of the great AB wins in the Republic.

Despite all the over hyping about how good SA are and the negativity around the AB’s, these are two very evenly matched teams.

Looking forward to the next game.
