All Blacks MOTM - RWC Final

@nostrildamus I'm hopeful JB can given how physically gifted he is. It just feels like a curse they carry around due to being so damn competitive 😁

To me, it's like they feel they HAVE to be the one to make the big play out of nothing (hence BB's "golden balls" moniker courtesy of Shag) but the team would be better served if they let the ball go earlier or played in the moment vs trying to get too many steps ahead.

The movements at 00:55s (JB hesitation) and 01.59s (BB hesitation) of this clip are perfect examples...

    @antipodean absolutely.

All the island unions had to do since professionalism - was rightly or wrongly, copy the NZ model. No rocket science involved, just get organised and copy everything from competition models to educational resource pathways and documentation.

The web made all that info accessible from S&C to skill development to coach education. Instead what we get is finger-pointing, corruption and self-interest at every corner.

    Telea, Savea, Tight-5

My personal gripe with the Barrett backs division is their tendency to hesitate once they're on the ball (in unstructured play). It makes it difficult for others to play instinctually off them since they chew up valuable milliseconds and put their own team-mates in two-minds about what their intention is.

On the rare occasion it pays off (BB chip n chase vs Ireland) but too often it ends up in a crap-shoot (e.g. JB knock-on after getting whacked by Du Toit while he considered his options) and our momentum dies in an instant.

I reckon they should utilise the free-kick as a restart mechanism for way more scenarios (e.g. accidental offsides, knock-ons, forward passes, throw not straight, kick-off not 10m) BUT prohibit kicking to touch or choosing a scrum option.

That way a team's only options are to tap and play quickly, setup a tap move like "the wall" or kick possession away (but not into touch obvs).

I think it would increase the ball in play time, decrease the common set-piece to set-piece snooze-fest (e.g. throw not straight -> lets have a scrum) and drive some new innovation.

If the deal goes ahead, it will be interesting to see the breakdown of income streams in years to come and whether it lives up to the hype.

NZ Rugby is already largely comprised of its commercial operations. Its 2020 accounts will get filed at this month’s annual meeting –scheduled for the 29th – where the unions will vote on whether to agree to a final proposal.

In calendar 2019, the national union generated income of $187.1 million, of which $57.5m was from broadcasting rights, $72.9m from sponsorship and licensing, and $16.4m from matchday takings. $27.9m of other income largely came from the union’s $20.2m of Rugby World Cup grants and $5m from NZ government grants.

Of its $194.5m expenditure that year, $54.2m went to the national teams, $92.3m to competitions and $14.1m on administration. Another $33.3m went to game development through NZ Rugby’s distributions to the 26 provincial unions.

In 2018 and 2019, that sets the commercial operations cost base at about $150m, with commercial income of almost $170m in 2018 and $147m the following year.

How that will actually look under a new model hasn’t been ironed out yet, with the prospective deal with Silver Lake still just a proposal.

@tim I wonder if Commercial LP will be filled with agency suits external to NZR's existing commercial arm.

Hoping its not a case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing when its all put into motion.

@MiketheSnow the idea of expanding a free-kick's scope and reducing it's restart options isn't to de-power scrums/lineouts, it's to discourage back-to-back-to-back set-piece restarts for minor transgressions.

Set piece tap moves also require skilled practitioners 😉
