It's a way to deal to a decades long issue where other pacific nations have been held back. NH teams get strengthened, NZ and Oz get strengthened. I'd like to see a more competitive Fiji/ Samoa/Tonga in WR. I'm getting a bit sick of the same old same old.

how does this move do that?

    It's a piece of a solution.
More available places for Pasifika players in Super Rugby likely means less players going to lower division teams in Europe where they don't get the same latitude (despite WR regs) to return to play for national sides.
Keeping those players closer also means more time together, sometimes combos will emerge in this team etc
Maybe players that can't make a NZ super side but are just WTG players can get to play and develop.
The experience and availability pool for Pasifika national sides increases.
It is then up to those counties to leverage this and improve.

If it isn't based in a PI nation, it's a NZ team. Calling NZ-born players PI players is disingenuous, or you are opening a massive can of worms.

Speaking of a can of worms, NZ is a collection of Pacific Islands.

I just read that Tim Nanai-Williams' contract with Clermont expires at the end of the Top 14 season and is unlikely to be re-signed. Maybe they should try getting him back, as he's capped by Samoa. Surely he still has a few seasons in him?

Sila Puafisi is a player that could play for this team. Back playing in NZ playing for Karaka. Counties Junior, played for Ta$man then overseas to Scotland, England, France. 27 Caps for Tonga. Tighthead Prop. Likely to play for Counties.

Ah but, according to a lot of media and PI supporters out there, NZ born and bred comes after PI heritage in which team they should play for

@maxwell NZR simply can't help digging holes for itself. It's about time we simply stepped back and said we're not seeking to be paternalistic in our relationships, you manage your own affairs and suffer the consequences.

                      @antipodean absolutely.

All the island unions had to do since professionalism - was rightly or wrongly, copy the NZ model. No rocket science involved, just get organised and copy everything from competition models to educational resource pathways and documentation.

The web made all that info accessible from S&C to skill development to coach education. Instead what we get is finger-pointing, corruption and self-interest at every corner.

@tim that smokes the Highlanders, takes depth from the Blues, and seriously disrupts other teams.

I think the key question is whether we have enough quality rugby players in the country and the Islands to sustain 6 teams. We have struggled in NZ with 5 ... the weak 5th team has been pretty clear, and shared around. Hell in 1996 it was the Crusaders.

It is possibly a good thing IF we stop losing players overseas. If you could keep NZ developed rugby players here, 6 teams would be a doddle. But I can't see it happening, and I still can't see the step up from islanders in the islands into Super. It's a massive, massive jump.

I hope it works, I'm just not confident, and it has a risk of damaging teams, provinces and people on the way through (Vikings anyone?)

@nzzp I don't think it's really necessary for the NZ teams to remain as strong as they are. Actually, it's probably better if they are diluted somewhat. As it stands they'll be on an even footing with about 2 of the Aus teams. They'll smoke everyone else, including Drua and whatever cobbled together MP team turns out.

That's only looking at SRTT as an end in itself (which, hopefully, it is). Hard to say what the flow on effects will be to the All Blacks and NZ rugby generally.

@tim Toomua has signed on with Rebels & RA until after the 2023 RWC.

A better pick would have been Naisarani who's off contract and reportedly doubled his salary somewhere, though i suppose he would be more likely to play for Drua.
