Come on guys this is just another example of a sub standard NZ player looking a million bucks up north as the quality of rugby is so much poorer up there

Calling Jordie Barrett sub standard is wild. He has his flaws, but so does nearly every rugby player. The ABs issues are primarily at 10. A good first five covers the deficiencies of most sides.

Playing Beauden Barrett probably exaggerated our issues, but we were hardly an all conquering side with McKenzie running the cutter. If you dropped a prime Carter into the ABs last year they probably win a couple of tests they lost.

It may be unrealistic to expect another DC will come along, but at the very least there will be another very good first five come along by the time the Lions Tour comes around, because that is what has happened right through the history of NZ Rugby, and it would be bizarre if the trend did not follow.

That guy isn't McKenzie, nor Plummer or Perofeta. I am not convinced it is a Cam Millar or a Josh Jacomb either. I don't follow the age-grade stuff close enough, but there is bound to be some one come along. Until this happens though, the ABs will remain inconsistent, and our midfield/outside backs will be effected by this.

Article did say talks had stalled.

        That means money.

RM would love to come back for the right $$$ I'm sure. But buying him out is expensive and NZR have no money.

Right decision to not pay, but I am very disappointed at how long this has taken and how much of a distraction this has been in the media. Coaches should be publicly backing their players, not squeezing one out for an overseas player who didn't set the world on fire at Test level.

The media bandwidth doesn’t really have anything to do with the negotiations though. The media are starving for anything that is happening so are writing seemingly useless articles about a faulty standard negotiation process.

Losing Harry Plummer as a 10 option is regrettable especially the way things have panned out with Mounga.

I think alot of the problems the All Black selectors are facing has to do with the NZR contracting system and lack of money.

I bet player agents are not satisfied with a baseline salary below what the overseas clubs are offering then match fees topping it up. In order to sign the likes of Beauden Barrett, Jordie Barrett, Sam Cane, Reiko Ioane etc they would have had to guarantee them a baseline salary the equivalent of the market rate whether they are selected to play or not.

With NZR short of money this would mean the selectors would have limited scope to pick anyone outside of the contracted All Blacks because the money has already been spent and new players just up the cost which NZR can not afford. There is probably a limited allowance for a few form players each season but there will be a budgeted cost which the selectors can not exceed.

I think as fans we are going to have to get used to the All Blacks being more like a Super rugby/NZ cricket side ie that once a player has a contract they will be involved in the All Blacks until that contract expires regardless of form.

I hope that the NZ government uses the same shaky economics that were used to dole out massive amounts of money for Americas Cup bullshit (which means far less to NZ's image, tourism, national identity etc), and buy us out of the private equity disaster, and separate professional rugby finances from community and schools rugby.

With Joe Schimdt standing down as Wallabies coach how likely are we to get him back as an ABs coach?

I'd love to see that happen. But not sure on the dynamics of him and Razor. We saw what a difference he made when he helped Foster.
I know it's only 1 year, but I'm second guessing Razor over him, if that was ever an option.

I wonder why he is quitting? Anyone have any scoop? Seems a hard job to keep for some reason.

Family. His son has medical support needs and both his son and Joe's wife live in New Zealand so he doesn't want to be away from them as much as the wallabies coaching role requires.

But that depend if the new coach wants that - they'd be a moron if they didn't, but who knows

Meantime, while Robertson and NZR fucked about chasing Mo'unga, they pissed about with Plummer so he decided to bugger-off.

Would be nice to have some sort of player development plan in place wouldn't it?

I wonder why he is quitting? Anyone have any scoop? Seems a hard job to keep for some reason.

Family. His son has medical support needs and both his son and Joe's wife live in New Zealand so he doesn't want to be away from them as much as the wallabies coaching role requires.

I got impression he took Wallabies job with some push from WR. If he was real keen I sure his son could get good care/help in Aus too, but Joe never intended (or I think was interested) in more than a caretaker role to help sort them out. Was a bit like WR was pretty keen on Aus getting 27 WC, as they needed help to get books sorted etc.
