I'm surprised Papali'i didnt make it. He was destructive for MAGS.

Papali'i signed with the Junior Warriors. His MAGS coach told me he's kinda regretting it as this season he's come to understand the breakdown laws and is loving his time as an openside flanker. They think he might come back to Union after his two years.

Etene Nanai (St Kents) is another to miss selection having signed for the Warriors. He's probably the best fullback in the country even though he has a year left at school. Word on the street is the Chiefs are trying to get him to break his Warriors contract.

@Wurzel Eteni Nanai Plays a lot like Melani. Any Relation?

A lot of kids sign deals with NRL sides before they start regretting them. I suppose it's hard for them to turn them down being so young and having contracts waved in their faces with NRL scouts everywhere these days.

He's actually cousin of Tim Nanai-Williams, who he's more similar in size and style too. Melani is a different specimen altogether from my observations.

Yeah, his cousin is TNW. I don't think he has any relation to Melani.

I've seen some good fullbacks in school rugby up here over the years, but Etene Nanai would top them all. I first saw him play 1st XV when he was 14, and I couldn't believe that that was his age because he looked way too good for someone that young.

I don't think any rugby team had a chance of getting him when a league team is willing to offer him a 5 year contract at 16. That's an insane deal for someone that young, but it also shows how highly rated he is. I guess the good thing is that he's at least with the hometown team, but I'm not sure if the Warriors are the right team to nurture his talents.

@Stargazer Wellington scored the winning try well after normal time to avoid going to extra time.

Well done the Waikato boys after the heartbreak of losing late in last years final. I watched parts of the game. Waikato started strongly and had a healthy lead before Auckland stormed back and made the final a cliffhanger at the end.

Was going to post the other day but forgot.

Cheers for the updates, Stargazer. I found some highlights of the Graham Mourie Cup final:

Couldn't find the Michael Jones Trophy final, sadly.

The Head Coach of NZ Schools is Jason Holland (Hurricanes Assistant Coach). Some of the Hastings BHS must have seriously pissed him off this season; how else would you explain that none of them made it in the NZ Schools squad? Hastings BHS were only beaten once this season. In the National Top 4 final. Geez, I find it incomprehensible! Four of the Hastings Boys in the NZ Barbarians Schools squad is a small consolation price after such a great season.

@Stargazer Selection in this team is always at the whim of the coach. Obviously Holland was determined to pick as many sons of former players as possible. I can't believe Slater is one of the hookers as when I've seen him play his lineout throwing and scrummaging have been average.
