The peak of podcasting. Once it gets on to the Tom Myers album it's so good. The GPS bit, oh my god.

One of my fall back pods is Empire with William Dalrymple and journo Anita Ananad - another of the Goalhanger stable. I like it but they drop three hour long episodes a week so I am months behind.

    Empire

What I did catch over the weekend was Dalrymple being interviewed by Kim Hill on her new long interview podcast https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/kim-hill-wants-to-know

It's very Hill. Well researched, wide ranging, assumes the listener has a brain - but if you don't like Hill it's definitely not for you. I found Dalrymple a fascinating interview and it's given me some more history rabbit holes to dive down.
The pod looks interesting Five episodes to date including Michael Gladwell, Boris Johnson as well as Dalrymple

I can't listen to Dalrymple, his voice is peak pomposity (it's weird that his face doesn't match his voice). But I've read and enjoyed his East India Company and Afghanistan books.

I'm in a weird place with podcasts at the moment, most of the history ones seem to cover the same topics so I'm finding I'm increasingly hearing the same stories multiple times. Which isn't a bad thing considering my memory isn't that great and I tend to have my mind wander while walking and listening to podcasts so will often miss parts.

I get what you mean but he is very bright bastard

The Hill programme confirmed that he is about as far removed from the prejudices we draw from his voice as it is possible to be.

Reckon he'd be a very entertaining guest at a long luncheon, with a few bottles of chablis

Anyone listening to the NZ Herald's Rainbow Warrior podcast? It's very good, especially their knack for getting access to important human and document sources. Same people who did the Mr Asia series.

No. But sounds like it's worthwhile. Might give it a go (and Mr Asia).

    Thanks for the heads up

Suited the dual citizenship of co-host John Daniell perfectly. He got access to the French perspective that NZ journos could never have got, simply through his connections and his fluency in French.

Don't tend to jump on to long long pod casts. But that was excellent.

    And rather scary.

    Thanks for posting.

I found it best to watch in thirds. The aid position outlined, if true, ought to be on front pages.

I love that you both consider this “long” at 1hr 20mins. Guess that explains why Rogans 3hr podcasts couldn’t crack the Top 100 pods of all time list recently! 🤪

That’s not a dig at either of you btw, I love that you both watched this and shared it - it’s one of the best interviews I’ve seen on this subject. I’d love my wife and kids to watch the video, but they probably wouldn’t spend the time. The minute that the POV didn’t match exactly with theirs, I reckon they’d turn it off. Sad!

In fact it isn’t that long, per se, but I found it quite granular, so I had to keep focussed. As opposed to my usual MO of having podcasts on in background and only listening hard to bits which grab my interest.

When I say "long" it's having the time to listen.

Best time is when I can switch off mentally from other stuff like when I'm walking or in the garden/mowing. And usually sport takes precedence.
