@Nepia haha I agree wholeheartedly on PB!!
I didnt mind Tarzan, although TBF, I had just spent 4 hours in a hospital (for a 2nd day) bed with a needle in my arm and a whole heap of anaesthetic in my face with minimal sleep....I wont watch it again to see if I think any diifferent, but stand by my initial opinion
Hahaha, so lucky - if only I had some anaesthetic when I watched it.

Watched "Sicario" last night. Fucking bleak that movie.
Not your average crime procedural is it? Blurred lines, lack of accountability, hints of sanction from higher up (without wanting to know details) it paints a murky picture. And that makes it. No emotional wrap up, no happy ending, just acceptance.
During the movie i found myself fucking annoyed by Emily Blunt's character. As i sat there thinking "don't be such a fucking stick in the mud, let the men get results" i realised how much the action movies of my childhood have warped my perception of movie characters. Blunt was essentially the "stupid chief" (cheers Ruthless) wanting shit done by the book, while the others were the formerly main characters, just doing what they need to in order to get the bad guy. And it was easy for me to slip in to the habit of rooting for them. It was only on reflection that i thought about how fucked up what they were doing must be to someone in law enforcement, or who believes in what they are doing.
Good movie, i enjoyed it. It looks amazing, the score is fucking great (that bass/cello leading up to every action sequence was cool as fuck), and it stayed true to itself.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
This was on Google Play for 99c so I thought it'd be a laugh. Pretty much what I expected after reading the book synopsis - which the film departed from in a lot of ways.
Anyway, bit of weaving the the fantasy/horror element into written truth as history knows it. Good fun.

"The Counselor"
What a great cast......what a fucken confusing pointless mess of a movie. Michael Fassbender ( the counselor who's name we never know ) gets into some illegal drug shit on the side with Javier Bardem ( complete with ubiquitous stupid hairdo ), both are, respectively, banging Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz ( who look sexy as all hell ) and Brad Pitt is in the mix as a cool Texan dude. Cue Fassbender taking risks and looking all blank and surprised when his life predictably turns to shit and drug lords come after him.
I think the moral message is something along the lines of greed being bad.
El Paso looks like a bit of a hole to live in too.

@MN5 i seem to remember a great trailer, but it got absolutely panned when it came out?
Had all the ingredients to be a fucken classic, that it was not. Not by a long shot.
Did I mention Cameron Diaz looked hot as fuck though ?

It was astonishingly bad. I recommend reading my great review.

Watched Where The Wild Things Are with the boy today. Did not really enjoy it, and neither did he. Very slow, kind of pointless/weird, with no real "end" to the conflict between the Monsters. Not my cup of tea.

Did you like it when Cameron Diaz fucked Javier Bardems car ? that was a definite highlight.

@Tim sure, link it, because you can bet I'm not trawling through this thousand page thread looking for it
Sadly, it's probably too old to have made the transition to the new site.

Master & Commander was fun. Gladiator was very so-so, which is about the best you can say for late career Ridley Scott (have any of you fluffybunnies seen The Counselor? That was easily the most profoundly and unwittingly awful movie of the past decade).
Big Russ was fucking great in the Insider and Romper Stomper. I suspect they gave him the oscar as a corrective to over looking his performance in the Insider.
It was probably the best performance as a scientist I've seen, and as someone who is mostly a cancer researcher now, it's one of the few genuinely inspirering performances I've seen.this was a pretty succinct review from 3 years ago....

Holy shit. Ebert would turn in his grave reading such a brief review. Don't talk yourself up so much next time @Tim

he may have done another, but that was all I could find....

That was just the capsule review summary. I wrote a drunken, rambling rant about it earlier.
the movie might actually make sense if one were to watch it in a drunk and rambling state. I might give that a crack, we've got it for 8 days afterall ( no wi fi at the weekender in the rapa so old school dvd hiring was needed )

Black Mass
The word i am looking for is "meh". It was, well, it was okay. I love me a good crime movie. This was not a crime movie.
My main gripe with it is, every single thing that is supposed to have happened is glossed over. The big take down of the mafia took what? 2 minutes? and wasn't mentioned again. His rise to crime lord happened off screen. The thing in Miami that needed a murder got zero explanation. There was zero tension in the move, as there wasn't really an antagonist, unless you count Cory Stohl, who had what, 5 minutes of screen time?
It's not even made very clear what the FBI guys were doing.
I get they were tying to tell 20 years of story in 2 hours, but come on, you need to give something for us to be interested in, or to root for, or hope to go down.
