funny but not uncommon story from the weekend, big injury toll currently and a few people away so even with 160 registered players we were very light in 3's and 4's....put out a call to old players, guys that couldn't commit to the whole season or whatever, cue messages from guys that have played on and off for maybe a decade...."can i buy socks?"....."how do you register?"...."where is "X" club again?"..."whats time do the 3s play again?"......the fact the answer to the last three questions hasn't changed in more than a decade....and yet they still have to ask....might explain why they've lost their socks!
We had a guy we called Master of (Sock) Puppets because he must have had a fucking collection of close to 20. Most of the Islanders didn't get the Metallica reference.
I realise rugby isn't top of mind for a lot of these guys, but I do wonder how they stumble through life.
And it gives me confidence I could quit my job and things would just work out.
-
i know right!
it also annoys me when they want socks...dont want to pay so you find an old pair...then they cut the foot off them...and then leave them in the changing room...just dont bother!....you're also playing 3's so i dont really care if your wearing the right socks

Very much fucked off with Parra Eels right now.
I helped arrange the final of a local schools comp for their flashy new field. Even had to move it a week to get availability - right up against school holidays. These are Opens XVs (school leavers in some cases) so need to run it this term before they start HSC.
Everything was fine until a phone call this morning. They're apparently moving their reserve grade women's TRIAL FUCKING MATCH to the venue the same night.
Get.
Fucked.
The schools comp director is not pleased and now I feel like a total fucking idiot.

Second Grade had a big win on the weekend against Sydney Convicts - the gay and inclusive team.
First Grade .... was weird... For starters, we got one penalty in the 2nd minute of the game.
That was it.
The whole game.Final penalty count I have as 15-1 against after reviewing the video, and a bunch of non-decisions that hurt us as well.
Then there are the cards...
Our 2 grades had a Yellow Card each going into Saturday for tackling - that's 14 games including some blowouts against us and some wins for us.
We had one yellow card in the 2nd Grade game on Saturday for a thumping tackle that I thought was marginal. The guy who got it already laid out 2 guys by reading their attack easily.
And then in the space of about 20 minutes in First Grade, just after halftime, we suddenly had 2 more YC and a RC.
So we've gone from 3 yellow cards over 15 games to suddenly 5 YC + 1 RC in 16.
TBH I'm still scratching my head at the refereeing decisions. I went back through the video as objectively as I could and some of them still don't make sense in terms of consistency.
-
Of course the cameraman completely missed the Red Card, so no chance of getting it thrown out that way
and while the opposition had a Veo set up on the opposite side of the ground, and they've promised to get it to me, it seems they've suddenly run into technical issues
Not saying it's suspect, as we won't play them again this year and so they have nothing to gain by denying us the footage.

Wayne Barnes out of retirement?

Wayne Barnes out of retirement?
Barnes would at least stop and explain his decisions.
This guy blew the whistle, pulled out a red card as he was walking to the penalty mark and just held it up while facing the sideline.
No double blast on the whistle to call time off.
No checking on the tackled player (who was on his feet anyway).
No checking with sideline officials - and I was in full ref kit.
No clearing players from both sides away from the mark, before asking the captain and the player over to explain the sanction. It was highly unusual.
I was running the flag on the far side and didn't even see the card come out (it happened in the centre of hte pitch)
Game stopped while everyone tried to figure out what was going on and whether it would continue.
-
It gets better.
The ref has now filed an incident report, accusing one of our players of intimidating behaviour and another of insulting him after the game.
The union has decided to cite them. FMD why do I bother when one ref basically wants to award 3 red cards against us for the day?

bit of a shit weekend
started off with no one putting their hand up to be the ground marshal so went down early to fill in at least until the 1st grade game
we have the new coach this year, started as one of the 2nd grade coaches but had a bit of a falling out and so moved down to help 3rd grade, hes also helped cover our colts games when needed. he was new this year so have tried to explain how things work and in general hes been dismissive. ive asked if he can do the rugby explorer app a couple of times (colts and 3rd grade) and both times "thats not my job, im just hear to coach" before actually turning his back and walking away
Ive also had to tell him a few times he cant go under the posts after a try is scored and coach during the game, or run water and coach....he does it anyway and brushes me off
so....sat, already running around sorting things and so a bit flustered, 3's are running out and hes walking behind them with a ball...'is that your match ball?"....looks at it like its the first time..."nah"....."where is your matchball?"....i dont know, thats not my job".....FFS....i run and get them a couple of balls
during the game, he goes down and coaches under the posts....the 4th offical reminds me hes not allowed....i agree and tell him again...brushed off...4th offical says he make a note in his match report...
after the game he comes up to me...starts explain "hes new"...."he doesnt know how thing worK"....not expecting me to completely unload on him...cue him going and having a winge to the director of rugby about people having in in for him
we also went on to lose 1s with a penalty as the final play of the game...and after the final whistle a group of bloke start chanting "fuck the House"...."fuck this and thats "...proper agressive....so as the bloody ground marshal i have to go and tell them they won, go and celebrate rather than abusing people after the game....to be met with "we dont care"..."what you going to do"....good point, not much i can do other than that
all in all just a bit shit
-
That's fucked. Straight to the Committee with that clown IMHO.
My coaches are hopeless with the scoring app so our manager gets by. I've started tapping a few people on the shoulder to help out and the message is gradually getting through.
Especially the Mormon guys, or at least those without kids. Theyre happy to help out. And just happy in general

the 4th offical reminds me
I dream of having a 4th Official. Even a 2nd and 3rd official would be nice. Especially after we got fire bombed two weeks ago.
It was interesting, reviewing all the video and looking at the stats. Game in yellow is the talking point.
TL:DR; we usually win the penalty count, but that doesn't affect the outcome. In maths terms, the penalty count both for and against for our R9 game is ~2.3 Standard Deviations from the norm.

Trying not to be a dick as I type this, but that sounds like a cultural issue in the club. My local might be as tribal as any other, but that shit wouldn't be tolerated.
-
@NTA yeah, thats what annoyed me more, we dont always have one, it was just because we were the broadcast 1st grade and womens game so he came down for the whole day...but this coach couldnt follow the rules for one game right in front of him!
those are some wild stats, you can understand how people start to think refs have bias. we have a real two have of the comp situation going on in Vic...it has been commenting on in the last few games the penalty counts have heavily favoured the teams form the bottom half.....we think Vic Rugby knows it doesnt look good having such a divide between teams

and thats what ive said to him, no one else in the club says things like "thats not my job"...thats not what we do, get stuck in a sort it...."are you saying im not carrying my weight".....he was not expecting me to say "no"
his game was about 10 minutes from being a forfeit because we didnt have the ground marshal (normal dude had a baby and so was away)....he could have actually done it himself but it didn't occur to him, just lucky Mrs Womble was working so i had gone down early to help out

@NTA that's Egon Seconds level refereeing.
I watched the game he did this week, and he's simply not good.
I wish he was as lenient on the high tackles with as he was with both sides Saturday.
