I've been trying to watch each Waikato Premier club team play at least once this year. As a couple of games were played on Friday I went to two of them over this long weekend. Melville v Ōtorohanga was actually closer than the final score suggested. Melville were held up over the goal line twice but poor ball skills and a lack of awareness of space out wide when they camped on the goal line cost them. The other game was Fraser Tech v Hautapu. This game probably wasn't as close as the final score but Tech kept coming back. Hautapu had some Waikato reps playing. Mitch Jacobson came off the bench and packed down at lock. That's club rugby for you!

This is Week 12 despite the graphic.

I went to the HOB-Tech game as I was interested to see Tepaea Cook-Savage playing 1st 5 for the latter. A heavy ground and intermittent rain didn't help but he was tidy and generally kicked well. Not afraid of contact either.

A few video highlights from Dunedin Club Rugby. Things looking very grim down there.

This was the final round. SFs next week. I watched the Marist-Matamata game in a huge mismatch. Marist could bring Waikato reps off the bench and played a loose forward on the wing in the 2nd half, who still distributed like a back.

Jason Rutledge gets his 11th Southland club title, playing a full 80 minutes at age 47.

    Logan Savory

The legend continues: Rutledge's 11th title at age 47

North Shore beat Taka 33-15 to take out the North Harbour club final on sat.

Back to back to back for North Shore who really are the dominant force in North Harbour rugby

Tech led for most of the game and had some chances to win at the end. The two best clubs will meet in the final.

I have no skin in the club game here in Wellington but I wandered along to Hutt Rec on Saturday to watch Hutt Old Boys Marist and Paremata-Plimmerton do battle in the Jubilee Cup semi-final. Not warm, but an OK day weatherwise with a swirly breeze of sorts.

High scoring affair with both sides guilty of resting on their laurels immediately after scoring. HBOM continued to be quite loose into the second half, and were down 19-37 before making a remarkable comeback to win 45-42 with the last play of the game. They were down to 14 for the last 10 too. Importantly, with 20 to go, they distinctly changed tactics and wore down Pare-Plim by building up the phases with their ball runners close to the ruck.

By all accounts, some of the HBOM committee/top brass had already been looking ahead to the final when having beers at the pub earlier that week, so some red faces were saved with that injury time five-pointer.

Will probably go and watch more club footy next year. It's quite fun to watch when you have no allegiances.

@Smudge warm welcome to the eagles nest fella. The old guy roaming the sidelines with the camera is WB, wander over and tell him Bones sent you next time, I'm sure you'll get a bev out of it.
