It's boring, repetitive, ineffective most of the time, and shows a lack of imagination

It's the result of slow ball. When the team you support is getting slow ball it's frustrating.

On the weekend some of that was conditions. Some of it was the result of the forward contest. We weren't generating quick ball

It was probably the most rational thing to do given the conditions. I am glad we were rational enough to use it and win rather than spinning it and being turned over and being told what dumb rugby we played.

    I fucking hate it

It's been the Welsh go to for the last fuck knows how long and has been instrumental in our shit record

    It can be stopped overnight

Soon as the 9 touches the ball he gets splattered

The Boks won't be that bad again. If we give the ball away in attacking areas we will lose in Saturday

But they kicked away a lot of possession over the first 60-65 minutes. It wasn't until the last 10 minutes when they started to dominate the possession.

Sure they might not make as many errors, but they will have to change their tactics even when they do have the ball to create enough scoring opportunities.

Plus their defence over the first 3 matches of the RC has been shown up to be quite porous.

Penalise the box kick, bring back rucking.

I reckon start by removing the caterpillar ruck, allowing the 9 to roll it back and set for the box kick.

Agree with @MiketheSnow hands on, you are free game, like it used to be as opposed to the roll it back, move it into ideal position, head up looking if the kick is still on, wait, kick

Outlaw the attacking chaser from jumping for the ball. Player safety improves, and the supposed reward for this boring shit play is diminished.

I like the concept, but think you will find the ball is just buried in rucks longer, or we will end up with endless pick and goes until the halfback has got room. Trouble is whatever law is changed, the coaches then brainstorm how to get around it.

Harry Jones, SA podcaster, had some interesting thoughts on Devlin's DSPN shown yesterday on why box kicks are the only option as the risk of turnover inside your half is too great (and other stuff I can't remember).

Follows on from Skinstad's thoughts about playing with territory to give you more chance of defending.

    @Dan54 I get that.

As I said, start with the caterpillar, and then maybe make it 2 hands on ball, fair game, menaing they can dig it out still...but def kill the caterpillar

This would make sense if we actually kicked long regularly, instead of often putting up box kicks from our own 22 that land (uncontested) on halfway!

I am firmly in the camp of hating box kicks. I would much rather see 12 phases of play, even if not much ground is made.

I also hate the cross kick, and was saying to a mate before Bok 1 how at least that seems to have disappeared from our game - so naturally we score off one immediately last week 😁

The problem with 12 phases of play, as someone mentioned above or on another thread, is that if your ball is slow with modern defences it is too easy to get turned over, pushed back, or penalised.

I am starting to think we need to consider pushing the defensive line back from where it is now.

Yeah, I understand the risk, and hence the reason fror the kick - just saying I don't like to see it - from a pure enjoyment perspective I'd rather see 12 phases of pick-and-go, blokes running full steam into each other, tackle and contest, ruck and counter-ruck - than a contested 50/50 high ball that almost always results in some sloppy fumble or tap back - it's rugby union I came to see, not fricken AFL!!!

Yeah I figured you'd understand the risk, I was just thinking aloud.

Absolutely. Limit teams to only being able to add one player to their caterpillar ruck. AND if the halfback uses their hands to get the ball from the ruck, it's out. It's BS that refs allow halfbacks to pick the ball up and then place it on the ground again when the majority of the time it's their own teammates who are restricting access to the ball.

@Bovidae especially with the 9 being protected too, I mean if a guy wearing 2 is playing 9 and gets scragged or pulled into a ruck, it is mostly overlooked, seems it is the guy wearing 9.

Would love to see it killed off mate, no argument. And all the protection halfbacks get!
