Australia playing India in ODIs - Oz won the first two. Watched a bit of the second one the other night.

Third one is on. Oz were cruising but lost their last 7 wickets for about 50 runs, so a pretty mediocre target of 236.

Oz playing with a bit of a regenerated line-up - Short, Renshaw, Connolly, Owen, Ellis.

India has Rohit and Virat batting 134/1 and looking in control.

Commentators were making a big thing about it likely being Rohit's and Virat's last game in Australia.

If so, they both finished well - Kohli had made ducks in the other two games.

    A couple of thoughts.....

No surprises with the Australians at the top of the heap. Look at Gilchrists win percentage !!!!! I am surprised Lyon made it though.

The Poms who got in did it more out of longevity than sheer brilliance.

No Tendulkar or Dravid really surprises me given their excellence and longevity.

No Lara less so as his team was often poor.

I can't find a list of most wins for NZ, I suspect KW and Taylor are at the top.

@Virgil turns out I was wrong about KW and Rossco, they're in a three way tie for second most wins with another player.....

Our greatest player ever only managed 22 wins in 86 tests which REALLY surprised me.

Care to guess who is first ? ( or cheat and Google it which is surprisingly hard to do )

I used AI. It's ideal for that sort of stat nerdery.

    Interesting answer!

Good man. Shouldn't take too long to figure out.

Another one that really threw me was an all time kiwi great only winning SIXTEEN of the 77 tests he played in. ( undisputed great, in my opinion our third best player ever )

We really do look back on the 80s with Rose tinted glasses a bit, in saying that draws were far more common back then.

Tendulkar 72 wins out of TWO HUNDRED tests. Just misses the table I posted above.

Given he was surrounded by any number of excellent batsmen and some very good spin bowlers in his career that's a poor return I reckon.

Top of my head 86 tests sounds like Hogan?
if so he did play the bulk of his career at some of our lowest points. Late 80's to early 90's we were pretty shit..

ahhh paddles, i knew Crowe played around the same number of tests. Actually less, 77.

There were alot of draws in the 80's too. Not just us but other sides too
India and Pakistan famously played out 12 or 13 draws in a row around then too.

    Oh absolutely.

But it was worse prior to that. Bert Sutcliffe is one of those old timers with a very good record, in the discussion for a greatest NZ XI of all time and he didn't manage a single test win in 42 attempts !!!! ( 23 losses and 19 draws )

Tragic news. Use of helmets has made a massive difference in the game, but I guess no 100% guarantees.

Looking at our test results by decade, easy to see why Hadlee and Crowe etc didnt experience so many wins

    1930s and 1940s - 20 Tests
    Won 0, Lost 6 , Drew 14

    1950s - 32 Tests
    Won 1, Lost 21, Drew 10

    1960s - 43 Tests
    Won 6, Lost 18, Drew 19

    1970s - 41 Tests
    Won 3, Lost 19, Drew 19

    1980s - 59 Tests
    Won 17, Lost 15, Drew 27

    1990s - 81 Tests
    Won 17, Lost 32, Drew 32

    2000s - 80 Tests
    Won 23, Lost 32, Drew 25

    2010s - 83 Tests
    Won 32, Lost 31, Drew 20

    2020s - 41 Tests
    Won 22, Lost 15, Drew 4

Easy to see our most successful periods and where we were the shittest.
surprised at how few draws there have been the past 5 or 6 years.

That's the changing face of Cricket. You can thank the awesome Australian team of the early 2000s for helping usher that in, no coincidence five legends of that era are in the top ten.

Pointing alone has WON damn near almost as many tests as Vettori played. That is incredible.

The great Viv Richards had a win rate of just over 50% ( 63 from 121 ) so even the all conquering team of that era had to contend with Cricket being played at a slightly more leisurely pace with loads of draws.

Who would have picked a SA-India final in the Women's WC before the tournament started? 3 v 4.
