"LIV Rugby"?

The game is constantly evoluting.
I watched a game of elite international rugby a few days ago.
New Zealand v Australia at U18 level.
129 points were scored in the match.
If you take that the ball was only "live" for about 37 minutes (about the mean at present).
That means that a point was scored approximately every 17 seconds.Incredible, to me at least.
Used to be you'd only see something like that in a lopsided under U13s game.
But there we have it in an elite match up.
Now that is rugby evoluting! Not sayin that's a good thing, but looks like that might be the direction we are goin.
-
New Zealanders have a fundamentally different view of rugby to the rest of the world for reasons that are very obvious.
You only have to look at the state of the game of rugby in the West Island to realise that.

Or both defence coaches should be jettisoned

A beautiful bit of writing from @sumostevenson:
-
@sparky They’ve taken the world’s most complicated sport and tried to complicate it further. All of this a year before the Nations League and Club World Cup start and the rugby battleship begins its slow turn to a more synchronised calendar.
If they’re desperate to invest why not just try and buy a team and turn them into a powerhouse?
-
@game_film and in a sport where international rugby, particularly the RWC is seen as the peak, meaning anyone jumping ship, cant play.

Or buy a whole competition. Reckon they'd be able to get Super Rugby for the change down the back of the King's couch.

This is actually a really interesting idea. Huge outside money to make the competition separate from each country, with Japan included and some NH marquee signings. The time zone fucks the value though.

R360's launch delayed until 2028 and I suspect for a lot longer than that.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/articles/cg5myyrm9nyo
-
"The decision to shift our launch to 2028 is a strategic decision based on timing," said R360 board member and former England centre Mike Tindall.
"Launching under compressed timelines would not meet the standards we set for R360, nor would it deliver the long-term commercial impact that the sport deserves."
Mike Tindall and Scott Hansen need to become business partners. They talk the same bullshit.
-
There are five enormous problems that I can't see those involved in R360 overcoming.
- International bans
Because unions won’t let players represent their countries if they join R360, the top-tier talent pool is unwilling to risk their Test careers. That significantly reduces R360’s ability to attract “superstars.” Only players too bad to play for their national team or totally done with international rugby will sign.
- Uncertain financing
Without a guaranteed broadcast or commercial partner, it’s extremely hard to see how R360 sustains itself, especially given the costs of running a global franchise league. How are they going pay all these superstars who they say they will attract to their league?
- Scheduling issues:
The global rugby calendar is already crowded. Fitting in a new worldwide franchise competition around existing domestic leagues and international fixtures is a major challenge. You've basically got early December and January when Rugby fans haven't got other games for their attention.
- The complicated nature of the Rugby Law book
It's not an easy game for the casual fans to follow or get involved with unless they have a cultural connection to a team. You aren't going to set up a team in Miami or Qatar and suddenly find you have thousands of passionate Rugby fans prepared to pay top dollar for their viewing experience.
5 Credibility and trust
With pre-contracts cancelled, deep scepticism and ridicule from Rugby fans, they have no visible momentum for their concept. Winning over players, unions, stakeholders, and fans from here looks a very steep climb.

and @sparky if they made a few rule changes that I thought could improve the game... that's about the only thing which would mean I'd watch a few games.
I actually think that is the existing game's biggest weakness to a competitor - the constant box kicking, the rules, the impossibility of error-free reffing, the cards and TMO bullshit. If it's better, more entertaining, running rugby - but retains the 'for all shapes' aspect and needing a few brain cells to play (i.e. not league), then things might start to get interesting.
