Japan would still make it. Probably USA and Canada. What markets are you worried about? Uruguay, Hong Kong, Namibia, Spain? About $10k revenue?

If you're going to have the extra teams, have a plate competition. Adjust the prize money based on how far teams get in the plate too
This was the prize money last time around
Pool stage £250,000
Quarterfinals £600,000
Semifinals £1.2m
Runners-up £2.5m
Final £4.8m -
Draw was rigged. You can't honestly believe that the country names pasted on a ping pong ball were unidentifiable from each other.
nevermind that the bucket was wide open while he was standing there for 5+ minutes.
Add to the fact that he is not exactly independent given his position.
Huge joke from the desperate NH sods that run WR.

USA wouldn't make it. They are the reason we expanded to 24 teams, so they can scrape in to the one they are hosting in 2031.

Isn't it easier just to give hosts automatic entry?

Don't really get the whinging, chances are we still have to beat SA in the final anyway
The issue here is the cumulative effect.
Do I think we can beat the saffas in the quarters, sure.
But the saffas, then France, then England, in 15 days . . . that's a smasha-a-thon.Even the saffas cant be thrilled about the prospect.
Definitely could have lucked an easier way.
-
Haha
I had a close look at the draw a few weeks ago.
And saw that a SA v NZ quarter was a very real possibility. Pools CD would have done it too.
And I started thinking . . . I hope that doesn't happen.
But it did.
I jinxed it!I mentioned it somewhere at the time . . . that this was a random draw . . . not like a tennis draw.
-
@mohikamo which makes the draw look even more like it has been designed to give one of England/Ireland the best shot of making it to the semi/final and possibly win.
Rankings are bragging rights, but WR give the impression they are used when doing the draw, which is the ridiculous part.
There are not enough competitive teams in the game for them to put us in 'bands' and do the draw as it is.
The fact that one of SA or NZ will likely be gone at 1/4 final time, and possibly the other at semi-final time, does provide ammo for anyone who sees WR in the NH as doing thier best to stuff SH rugby.
But hey, if we manage to get past SA, France and then England (cos Ireland lose thier 1/4 haha) then Razors depth goal of 4 players in each position will have come to fruition!

It’s absolutely stupid. Rugby hating itself again and again
Sure we are #1 and #2 now and may not be in a years time - but if the draw has to be done now then it’s the best info we have. And every sensible tournament since time began tries to have the best players/teams meet as late as possible, ideally in a final where we get to see the best against the best on the biggest stage.
-
Why not just allocate the top 6 to pools based on current rankings in a way that looks best like it’ll keep 1 and 2 apart longest, then have a draw for all the rest to make up the pools?
That way we avoid this situation, and still get a chance for a fun lopsided pool with 3 competitive teams that probably weren’t going to make it all the way anyway
-
The problem is that WR thinks they need to do the draw so early relative to the start of the RWC. It's a joke when you compare the timeframe FIFA works to. The compromise and sensible thing to do is that you only determine the teams in each pool at this stage and then assign them a letter (Pool A, B, C etc) based on the current world rankings of the Band A team. So a random draw and then a logical system to keep the top teams apart until the SFs.

They can't break the cup monopoly on the field, and have to enlist help via back boadroom shenanigans

If Robinson had pulled out the ball with NZ or SA early we wouldn't be having this conversation. I did find it strange that they went from Pool F to A for all bands.
Australia were already in A
They wanted to leave the hosts fate dangling
-
For most fans a 2-year window is necessary to organise travel, accommodation and logistics
And raising the cash
-
@MiketheSnow Yes, could have alternated A-F for Band 4 and 2, and F-A for Bands 3 and 1. You know, some imagination.

@mariner4life So do the draw in 12 months time. The reality is that the organisation is shit. The tournament structure is shit, and there will be no point watching until the quarter finals. It's a low quality product that will probably be marred by cards and pointless TMO interventions. That's reality.
So just don't watch until the quarters?
Rugby making more money and potentially bringing in more fans, as well as the experience for the nations and players isn't a bad thing.
If we ditch "cricket score" countries, we don't get to glow at watching Hesketh in the corner.

The rankings only had a small effect; it made sure the top twelve teams were paired up in the pools.
Nothing else.
The most important position in the current rankings was probably 12th.
Meaning that the 13th team (Georgia) would be sure to be pooled with two relatively strong teams.
But it didn't work out too bad for Georgia; they ended up with Italy and Romania, who they'd quite fancy i'd say.The randomness factor would definitely be the preferred option of the lessers (the Euros).
Imagine Wimbledon where most of the top seeds end up on one side of the draw, lovely (if you are on the other).
