Thata boy Archer, absolutely carrying England this match. Crawley, Duckett, Pope, take note of how your best bowler has shown you how to bat in a test match.

Starc steps up, Stokes's bowled just as I was idly wondering about the deficit really shrinking

Archer goes for 51, that's a hell of a knock from him given the circumstances. Has given England an absolute sliver of hope, but, they're going to have to fucking roll the Aussies on a very good batting pitch, so still almost no chance unless Archer can really fire up.

Arguably England's best couple of sessions of the series, simply by virtue of showing a bit of guts.

I can't believe he didn't review that. As a left hander, if I had the benefit of DRS I would have reviewed every single LBW from a right arm over the wicket bowler unless it hit me on the full.

Not as good as yesterday but call it a pass mark. Good call I think to take 20 overs at them.

Maybe he's a good T20 buy. But Cameron Green must be one of the lowest averaging Test number 5s for Australia - 34.

Wonder if Khawaja has done enough to save his Test career at the expense of Green, when Smith is back.

Most overrated cricketer since Shane Watson.

He must have a hell of an agent.

270+ is already more than England are going to make batting 4th. Head and Carey have done well here.

    How long until the declaration?

Green is turning out to be a bit of a myth really. They are desperate to make him a top order player without any real justification. That record might fly if he was batting at 7 and bowling a lot.

He'll keep his spot because Inglis has done nothing to keep his, but Webster must be feeling a bit gipped.

He'll also keep his spot because he's in his 20s

Inglis will go. If they are smart they will drop Green to 7.

Point for discussion. Are there no top quality test players under 30? Starc, Head, Carey, Archer, Root, Stokes have been the standout players so far and all over 30. Is the focus on T20 producing a generation that can't bat or bowl for long? Answers on a postcard

Australia solves it by rarely picking anyone under 30 now.

On stats, Henry Nicholls would walk into the Aussie #5 spot...

I think yes. They have all the shots but don't know when to use them. I think the riches on offer and the fact that young players can really only make money on the T20 tour is playing the patience out of them.
Guys who are happy to hit the top of off over and over (not a great trait in T20)
Guys who are happy to bat time when needed.

Throw in there are only three nations that play bulk test cricket and this is where you get to

Travis Head is a way better player than his record suggests, and that is probably a black mark against him. He'll go through real lean patches of pretty 30-odds and then peel of a succession of good hundreds. An aveage of almost 43 isn't shithouse, but you watch the ease with which he scores, and how tough he seems, and the shot selection he possesses, and it should probably be 5 better.
