While there was a bit of talk pre-Christmas about which former players (etc) were determined to set up the latest T20 franchise league in NZ, and the rolling of the NZC CEO - it's worth acknowledging a few who have quietly been right back at the grassroots lately.

Wags (commentating tonight) was spotted umpiring at the Hawke's Bay Cricket Camps at Marewa Park this morning alongside LRPL Taylor.

We also had Grant Elliot umpiring at one of our games last week at Windsor Park. Given the time lag since he last played and the age of the kids - the parents were probably the ones most excited by that 🙂

NZ could have tried a bit harder to defend 26 by the sounds of things........

They didn't get the chance. They were down by 46 after both teams had batted first (200 vs 246), then spectacularly failed to make England bat again.

    Great doco this.

Quite poignant seeing Robin Smith right at the start. What a tough fucker he was on the Cricket field. Totally fearless. Cool seeing all the Caribbean characters being interviewed, by goodness they had some magnificent players. I wonder who would come out on top, the 1980s Windies or the 2000s Aussies ?

Massive oversight and very offensive to completely neglect to mention that they lost a series to NZ 1-0 right after that Australian one in 1979/80. I guess that fact might have ruined feel good factor......

They were mighty pissed off weren't they ? again, would have ruined the doco to have this carry on in there......

Been watching the first few overs of NZ u/19s v India.
Are these batsmen the best we have at u/19 Level there techniques are terrible.
They stay crease bound no foot movement or weight transfer towards the ball.
What are they coaching in the youth programmes in NZ.
    It is embarrassing to watch.

Too much T20 these days. Technique coming secondary these days perhaps?

NZ had two abandoned games due to rain before this game.

Maybe but there is technique in 20/20 batting I really didn’t see any.

Had to jump back on here to vent how tf does Kyle Jamieson keep getting selected for T20 cricket - gets slaughtered every time and hands momentum to the opposition.
Not his fault he keeps getting picked, a great lad (from Papatoetoe to boot!) and can be lethal in longer form cricket, but cannot understand the logic in T20 selection.

In fairness, against india on a bouncy pitch he was a real handful. His display at Eden Park was what got him paid in the IPL ... but it' been downhill since then. If he's not bowling well he seems very hittable.

Especially when they kept him out of the test team to save him for the limited overs stuff ( where his presence could have ensured a 3-0 series win rather than a 2-0 win ) when every bowler we had broke down.

Some general thoughts. The programmes (where they exist) seem to be fairy piecemeal. Outside of the biggest centres there seems to be a bit of a lottery about which coaches a player will encounter (or not) on their development journey.

Also seeing a few players who are (arguably) being taught how to power hit, etc, before they've been taught and absorbed some good batting basics.

From what I saw that makes sense, there was a lack of batting basics.
You need a foundation to power hit effectively .

Just tuned into the u20s and the kiwi batsman marking his ground flicked a big mound of dirt into the wickets while the bowler was walking back. If the bails fell, would the ball be dead anyway?

And is Jones the son of Andrew? He's got the same mildly sad/bemused/confused facial expression.

No. He is the grandson of Jeremy Coney though.

That'll be the bemused look then.
Jeremy Coney . . . the slowest bowler in the history of international cricket!
