All Blacks - New Coach Selection

As I posted a while ago what if coaches turn down the chance ATM,due to what they see as bad timing etc.
Since then Brown,Schmidt,McMillan maybe Rennie and Cotter could also opt out.
That leaves a default Joseph option what if he opts out.
Left with assistant coaches Hanson,Ryan or Who ?.
A few posters jumped on my post and bagged it maybe they didnt stop and think about what coaches maybe walking into.
It may hurt the coaching portfolio not booster it in the short time, After the WC perfect time for a coach to take over.I don't recall anyone bagging it, just posting alternative theories. Bloody kids and their rush to offence these days.

You'd have to be pretty naive to think we'd have had multiple high quality applicants midway through a rwc cycle, let alone the 1st choice 'team' with several 'qualified' candidates currently contracted elsewhere.

There's a need for serious bridge building over the next two years. NZR should be in regular contact with the coaches of interest
-
Been contrasting this NZ coach selection process with what's going on in the NFL.
10 head coaches got moved, that is nearly a third of the league.
So that's 10 positions up for grabs; plus they'll need new teams of assistants; so 20 more primo coaching spots, plus all the rest.
F'n chaos.
Because of the nationality thing, the NZR field is limited in comparison; but probably wider than any other national rugby team, with the same restriction. -
Further clarity from today's press conference:
Lancaster said there was no deadline on when an announcement would be made but confirmed the next coach would be appointed through to the end of the 2027 World Cup.
Robertson’s former assistants Jason Ryan, Scott Hansen and Tamati Ellison remain contracted to NZ Rugby but it’s likely the new coach will have the final say on the make-up of their coaching staff.
“We’re very confident there is a really high calibre group of eligible candidates out there and there will be significant interest in the role,” Lancaster said.

Guess its a bit of a chicken and egg situation.
I mean if they felt Razors position was untenable, as it appears, then they would have binned him without looking at other options first.
I guess in theory, they could have sounded JJ and Cotter out before pulling the pin, but then that could then be seen as pre determining the decision and would it fill you full of confidence if you were approached like that while Razor was still in the role?
However you paint it, it doesnt look good, from needing to move Razor along to now needing a new coach.
I think the process post 2019 and 2023 has tainted things somewhat, although hopefully people now see some grown ups have taken control again so that bodes well...hopefully.
-
I'm relaxed.
They are taking their time and evaluating all the options that fit their stated requirements of an experienced, New Zealand international Head Coach. Interested candidates aren't speaking to the media, but those who have ruled themselves out or can't apply are doing so.
Not everything is playing out in the public arena. There is a competitive process that follows the requirements of the board.
This is how high-level recruitment works. Or should do.

Yeah, I think people are expecting gossip every day on what's happening after the Razor saga was all over the place.

Unlike the NBA or EPL, there was no realistic way to pin the interim coach tag on one of Razor's assistants, especially considering at least one of them was part of the problem
-
Pulling the pin on Razor had probably crossed the minds of some the NZR honchos during last season, just like it would have with a fair proportion of the ferners.
They would have been considering alternatives, if not discussing it, comtemplating.
So when the axe did fall, the likes of Kirk already would have had a clear idea of how they were going to proceed.
Doing it differently to 2019 and 2023 . . . I kinda like it that there is no "sure fire" candidate.
Been more than two decades since we've had this situation.
I'm hoping this situation gives the entire NZR setup a good shake.
Kirk might be hoping that too.
Especially the rest of the black team coaches, none of whom have been setting the world on fire in the last few seasons.
It still might turn to shit, but I sure didn't like how it was trending before. -

You have great faith in Captain Kirk. I hope you're right!

The only hole in the narrative was the fact that Kirk wasn't in command until recently

You're convincing me to change my mind; you must have experience selling insurance or something.
What they knew: At the end of the day, Joseph should be available.
Therefore: We can - at least - get the coach of the ABXV
If that is the starting point, you can run an open recruitment pretty confident you'll get at least one person who fits the profile.

Cotter, Rennie & Schmidt were big missed opportunities after Hansen decided to continue after 2017 Lion's tour, back then they were still early 50s and at top of their game, probably would've prevented the team's steady decline between 2017-2021, especially if Schmidt was in a long term backroom role like Smith was.
In 2026 the timing is just unfortunate because all of Rennie, Schmidt, Cotter are in their 60s and are already planning for life beyond coaching in a few years time.

Kinda looks like only Vern was available - or did Rennie only sign with Glasgow after Steve decided to stay on (and did Joe extend with Ireland for the same reason)?

Schmidt was unavailable in 2019.
