Brown, Schmidt, Cotter and Smith all ruled out.

We're on our way to get the most journeyman coaching team imaginable aren't we?

What at first looked like as a very slick, performance manoeuvre by NZR is starting to look like the same old amateur-hour fumble by the so-called guardians of our national game.

Nonsense, there is absolutely NO WAY they could have continued with Razor and his team given how fractured the environment had become and how poorly the ABs were playing, going backwards in a lot of areas. The risk of keeping Razor on was far greater than the risk of not finding the very best candidate possible for the role.

    @sparky Bugger!
I thought he could offer the steel that has been missing.
Who would have predicted 15-20 years ago NZ would struggle to find anyone who actually wants to coach the AB's.
Jamie has the job as he seems the only one who is left with a passport that wants it.
But even he must be thinking his assistant pickings are getting mighty slim.
Offer Rennie whatever he wants to be HC or Ass...

What if Ardie doesn't like that steel? Where would that have left Cotter?

I'd leave him having to drop a player who should've already been dropped.

@No-Quarter couldn’t agree with this more.
So much bed wetting on here from some posters.
The conversations will have been going on for some time and who is and who isn’t available known before the sacking.
What is not negotiable is that it had to happen and Kirky running the ship means it will be done well.

The mood seems to have gone from "ok great JJ will come in and take over, bring back a hard edge to the team" to "fuck, all the potential contenders are dropping out".

JJ isn't my first choice. That's Rennie, but he seems to have ruled himself out (and after he was treated last time it's understandable he wouldn't want to apply again) so that just leaves JJ.

As @No-Quarter notes there's no way we could have continued with Razor at this stage so if it's JJ then it's JJ.

Clearly the panel are talking to New Zealanders overseas who have coached at Test level.

How would the Fern feel about the return of John Mitchell?

There is a lot of overreaction going on here.

Peter Kean, Owner of the Highlanders, had been talking to David Kirk a lot in the weeks leading up to Razor’s sacking.

My source had no clue what the conversations were about, but given the events that have followed, you can probably piece things together.

By making Joseph NZ XV coach, they kind of showed their hand - Cotter was not in their thinking.

I had heard Schmidt as Director of Rugby, and believe that is something that will eventually happen, but he is going to owner his agreement with Australia. Given this is not a coaching role, and is a job he could hold for say 10 years, I guess timing is not everything.

Tony Brown has ‘ruled himself out’ - I’d wait on that. We all know he wants to work with Jamie Joseph, so without knowing the terms of his contract it is impossible to say what might unfold.

As for other assistants, I think it is likely Jamie would want a thinner coaching team anyway, but half the assistants probably stay.

Assuming Joseph does get the job, and the selection process, is simply a process, I would then imagine he will meet individually with each of the coaches.

I have heard he gets on fine with Jason Ryan, and given he reviewed fine, I think it is likely he keeps his job. The alternate is seemingly Jamie Mackintosh, who would be easy to get.

We know he has coached with Scott Hansen before, but down to pure optics I’d be surprised if he is kept on. I think Brown is likely to be the target for the attack, but if the truly can’t get him, then Kenny Lynn, who Joseph rates highly, is the probable target. I would imagine getting him out of his Argentina contract would be doable. Given Leon McDonald is his cousin, don’t discount that either.

Jamie also gets on well with Tamati Ellison, so would not be stunned to see him retained too - though there were question marks around the defence. I think both Cory Jane and David Kidwell would be in the frame, both heavily attainable.

I am yet to see any credible evidence that NZR won’t get their new preferred coaching team over the line.

So more of the same shit. Next you will be telling us Beauden Barrett is nailed on at 10 till 2027

Always rated Mitch - could never see him as HC of AB's again but in a specialist role absolutely, very qualified - very experienced

Why? If (and I say if) Robertson wasn't doing job, why does it suddenly look bad. There is almost never more than 1 or 2 standing for AB (or any international) coaching job.
On the Cotter thing, we has a whisper on here, but also suspected there something as word around a couple of weeks back (before the AB stuff broke) that Blues were looking for a head coach.

    As an assistant, sure, maybe.

Anyone who for any moment thought the All Blacks coaching unit was going to include two or more of Joseph, Rennie and Cotter has been dreaming.

@george33 I did say maybe. He has a lot of experience and recent success. Could be a good defence coach option - he'd have to be better than Tamati Ellison. His history with the All Blacks obviously counts against him significantly, but if he's definitely not the same coach he was back then, perhaps, maybe.

I'm going to back flip and put Joe Schmidt back into contention maybe tho back end of the year in some sort of roll
Apparently he's still talking to NZR and Kirk has payed him a visit.

If he gives Cully a formal apology for the way he treated him I'll think about it

I dont read the Blues thread, but the Cotter to Reds move has obviously been on for a while, surprising in the present circumstances that it wasn't more than just a whisper on TSF.
