All Blacks coach race: Jamie Joseph and Dave Rennie emerge as only real contenders

Applications to be the All Blacks head coach closed today and having started with a long list of 11 who met the criteria of having previously been in charge of an international team, six were effectively deemed of high interest, but it’s likely only two have put their hat in the ring.

For the seventh successive contestable process, the supposed ultimate job in world rugby has most probably only attracted two genuine candidates: Jamie Joseph and Dave Rennie.

Even then, it was not always certain the latter would apply, having hummed-hawed due partly to a long-held desire to take a break once his current commitment with Japanese club Kobe finishes in May/June, and partly because of a long-held lack of trust in New Zealand Rugby to behave in a consistent and transparent manner befitting a high-performance institution.

Also mentioned was that Dave Rennie had such a bad relationship with NZR, and particularly Steve Tew, that he didn't want to apply for AB coach in 2019.

Well as he was signed up by Aussie well before job even came up, I guessing that may of had something to do with it.
Probably regrets having anything to do with Wallabies, as when applying for any international job, he will never escape the fact that he has the worst winning percentage of any Wallabu coach, and some of them have been ordinary!

Jamie Joseph has the job the work throughs are who the assistants are Hanson,Ellison and Ryan stay on or Jane,Lynn and McIntosh, come on board.
Pipe dream by NZR trying to get JJ and Rennie to work together maybe they can produce a miracle.
JJ was tagged for the Job before Rqzor was cut they are just working out how the above plays out.

Wait, do you mean the above as in the possibility of Rennie working with Joseph or whether to dispense of the current assistants?

Yes the hope that NZR can get Joseph and Rennie to work together.

@Frank i honestly wouldnt have a problem with it if it made things clear....definitive.....a statement....but if we faf around for several weeks only to end up with the pre determined option....its juts a waste of time

    Absolutely.
Lying to the public that the job is open when the outcome is predetermined.

I don't personally believe Kirk is that unprofessional.

Kirk already lied by telling everyone the players were only told an hour before the press release Razor was sacked.
The players knew well before that.

Yep Chris, but who told the players (if it true), was it Razor himself, if he was close to some of them?

I can't see them keeping Scott Hansen under any circumstances.
Too tethered to Razor in the players' minds and too much of a cock.
I can't see Ellison being retained either. Too shit.

Yep but Hansen worked with JJ before he worked with Robertson (with no reported problems)

Let’s just hope the new assistants are demonstrably better.

These are the resumes of Jane and Mckintosh.
I see fuck all to get excited about.

    Cory Jane
Cory Jane has focused primarily on professional club coaching within New Zealand since retiring from playing in 2017.

Current Role: Assistant Coach (Defense) for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby Pacific.

International Ties: While he hasn't coached a national "Tier 1" side yet, he is frequently mentioned as a rising defensive specialist. His international experience remains centered on his legendary playing career (55 caps for the All Blacks).

Scope: Mostly domestic (NPC with Wellington) and regional (Super Rugby).

    Jamie Mackintosh
Jamie Mackintosh has actually had a more direct brush with international coaching than Jane, specifically with "emerging" and Tier 2 nations.

Tonga National Team: Mackintosh served as an assistant coach for Tonga during the 2023 Rugby World Cup under head coach Toutai Kefu.

All Blacks XV: In 2025, he was named as an assistant coach for the All Blacks XV (New Zealand’s senior developmental side) alongside Leon MacDonald and Jamie Joseph.

Other Experience: He spent time in the United States as a player-coach for the Austin Gilgronis in Major League Rugby (MLR) before returning to New Zealand to coach with Otago and the Hurricanes.

Now ask what the players think of him.

My sources tell me Jamie Joseph and Dave Rennie could definitely work together - in fact the pair have spoken.

JJ as head coach, Rennie as lead assistant (Attack), Ryan doing the forwards, Jane the likey defence coach.

@Frank yeah not exciting, but could possibly do a job over a couple of years under a decent head coach.

I don't know any of the players to ask them. How many do you know?

I not for him or against him, just saying the supposed opinions from players have been in here, not from players. I just wonder if he was a better AC with good head coach.

I would be keen on that line up, I do admit, and would help set up Rennie for top job later?

What your track record for your sauce's accuracy mate?
Perfect premium ketchup, or rancid rotten Watties?

We will see,I hear Jane may take up a strategic coaching spot with the back 3.
Ellison may also stay as defence coach with Jane assisting .
