When I was a kid in NZ, it was DC superheroes (Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern, Justice League), small British war digest comics, Beano, Dandy, MAD magazine, and maybe some Disney and Casper stuff for the younger kids. (I used to read those Scrooge McDuck comics quite regularly when I was small, and had no idea the artist Carl Barks was/is considered a genius.) As I say, I rarely-if-ever saw Marvel comics on the newsstands.

I have been doing contract work for a comic book publisher for the past several years that has introduced me to many top artists in the field who work for Marvel and DC (back in the 1960s, and current artists today), and being mostly ignorant about the genre since I was a kid and having never really read Marvel comics, I had to get up to speed very, very quickly so that I didn't appear too ignorant. I have tried to read as many classic comics from the past century that I can get my hands on, and have really enjoyed the 1960s Marvel volumes and I'm pretty much committed to watching every comic book movie adaptation that comes along.
When I was a kid the local news agent sold 3 comics. Superman, Deano and 2000ad. I chose the latter and have been huge Judge Dredd fan since then. I hoping the latest film will be good but don,t hold out much hope.

Been overseas for a couple of weeks, and had access to almost no english language tv, however late one night I started watching a old movie (missed the first 5 minutes) and really enjoyed it.

It was from 1952 and called Limelight. It was a drama about an aging comedian (played by Charlie Chaplin) and a young suicidal ballet dancer. There is a fantastic comedy duo act in the last 20 minutes of the movie with Chaplin and Buster Keaton on stage together.

Recommended, especially for those who like Chaplin and Keaton from their silent movie days
Watched Killer Elite - Jason Statham, Robert Deniro, Clive Owen

Which is based on a true story following the SAS involvement (or not) in Oman where a Sheikh wants revenge on the SAS for killing his sons. BAsed on the book, The Feather Men by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Is not too bad for a 'based on a true story' plenty of action, with a movie plot, so I expect there was a bit of poetic licence involved!

Thought it was meandering and boring for a Statham film, to be honest.

dunno, you seen his last few? IMO, it appears he is moving out of the 'action hero' type roles and while still in a kind of action film, his role is certainly nothing like those which had catapaulted him to fame.

Assassination Games with Jean Claude Van Damme.

JCVD is getting a bit cool in his old age. A pretty stylish version of a hit man movie.

Yeah have seen them. I reckon he's better suited to stuff like the Machinist though.

Statham was cool in The Italian Job. After that he has been a cliche.

I decided to watch the Costner movie Swing Vote due to the upcoming election. Was a pretty good film although the ending was a bit telegraphed.

I like Statham in his Transporter/Crank style roles but also like him in ones where he has to act like The Bank Job. He was also good (voice) in Call of Duty 2.

I'll definitely watch Killer Elite as it also has De Niro, but I really do not get Clive Owen, he has zero charisma.

yeah Clive Owen certainly didnt make me believe he was as tough as his character was supposed to be...

I tend to rate 'true stories' with a different measure, as they can so easily be blah as they are just telling a story.

Killer Elite, like Bravo Two Zero will have a bit of poetic licence involved as the British MIlitary don't really things coming out about the SAS Ops.

Watched Human Centipede and Human Centipede 2 back to back the other night. Not sure what I think of them yet, but I am glad I saw them. I love twisted minds. They aren't for everyone, the sequal pushes the boundaries a lot more than the first.

I thought the actor that plays Martin was brilliant...

watched The Debt; Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Sam Worthington

Thought it was a bit slow and all a little bit average.

I came into it half way through and it seemed alright. Perhaps that's the secret?

I've been on a small movie watching binge:

Captain America: Chris Evans and Tommy Lee Jones. Competent comic book movie, although they messed up the CGI when he was puny - especially in the car, he grew and shrunk with each cut and angle. Chris Evans actually impresses me as an actor when I'm unsure if he should. I actually believe his characters.

Crazy, Stupid, Love: Steve Carrell, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, and Julianne Moore. Pretty good rom com type movie with some pretty funny parts, a decent story hindered by an obvious twist.

Drive: Ryan Gosling. Wow, I'm really confused about this movie. On the one hand I really enjoyed it, on the other hand the existential-ness of it just pissed me off. I thought it was a good story which would have been better without the number of long slow motion scenes. Critics love it, but probably for the opposite reasons that I do.

30 Minutes or Less: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, the indian guy from Parks and Rec, and a hot indian chick. A heist comedy with Jesse Eisenberg kidnapped, had a bomb strapped to him and forced to rob a bank. I thought it was bloody funny. It's the only time the parks and rec guy hasn't annoyed the hell out of me. And the indian chick is stunning.

Centurion: McNulty from the Wire and Michael Fassbender. Story of the legendary Roman 9th Legion who went missing in Northern England/Scotland. Pretty good action film.

The Guard: Brendon Gleeson and Don Cheadle. A small town irish policeman helps the FBI hunt some drug smugglers. This was bloody funny, Gleeson is hilarious and Cheadle is basically good in anything he does.
