I don't watch much TV these days, and I kinda despise "reality tv" shows... so I am kinda weirded-out being somewhat hooked watching Storagre Wars.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_Wars

I didn't know anybody else watched it, until I read a big feature at ESPN's Grantland about the program, where they had watched all 52 episodes (to date), so I suspect others might like it too.

Interesting Article in the NBR about TV Shows/ Copyright etc etc using GoT Series 2 as an example..

The Game of Thrones effect: Season 2 debut sends NZ-US internet traffic through the roof

UPDATE April 5, 2011: I was just talking to the boss of one of our largest ISPs.

He said international data traffic went through the roof last Tuesday. As in completely blew the lid off.
There a huge spike in data being sucked down from the US.
That was the day when the first episode of Game of Thrones, season two, debuted on HBO in the US (Monday US time).
Season two doesn't start on Sky TV until April 16 (although there was an iSky preview on April 4).
So it seems a huge number of Kiwis could not wait for April 16.
Or, if they're not Sky TV subscribers, were not willing to wait a half-year or longer to appear on disc (and, alas, in terms of standalone download services it will never appear on NZ newcomer QuickFlix, despite HBO's $A10 million investment, due to Sky TV having rights locked up. Same goes for the hapless iTunes NZ).
I'm not willing to break the law, but I am willing to break Apple's terms and conditions to commercially access the US version of iTunes (see details below), whose movie and TV section boasts everything iTunes NZ lacks, including a good section of movies, and new-release HBO shows. And it can all be streamed from your broadband internet connection to your regulalar television, in high def, via a $159 Apple TV gadget.
iTunes US is not offering Game of Thrones season two yet (or it seems rivals like Hulu) - so I'm guessing a bunch of that New Zealanders downloaded it illegally.
You could see on social media that many were torn (including one member of John Key's staff). They didn't want to break the law. But, boy, they loved their Game of Thrones, and it was just so tempting to download a dose.
Most would pay if given the chance, as the commercial NetFlix has proved in the US by moving ahead of BitTorrent in traffic terms.
But if they're not given a commercial download option, and they need it now, well .... look at what happened.
How long can the entertainment industry stay at war with its own customers?
A lot of people have asked me how iTunes US is going.
It rocks. It's changed my life, or at least the TV and movie and part of it.
It's a wonderland of great, up-to-date content (ironically, a Games of Thrones seasons one delay was one of my few disappointments; it only recently came available).
And my ISP and Apple are doing very nicely from me, thank you very much, as I repeatdly stock up on iTunes credit, and top up my data cap.
Way back in the thread someone was asking about 'The Killing' and there were comments about the US Version being crap.

I haven't seen the Danish version and while I don't doubt that it is very good, I started on the US version and haven't stopped. I really like it.

I imagine that it has been done very true to the original as the settings in Seattle and the constant rain give a very Euro feel. The acting is first grade. It is purposely a slow burner that squeezes out bits about the characters in very small doses and at times the story of the Victims family drags a bit and gets melodramatic.

I would recommend it if, like me, you can't be arsed with a foreign language veiwing. It's hardly crap.

Infact I got hooked on it enough to watch the second half of Series1 in succession last night and have started on Series 2.

It's terrible, they're the most incompetent cops ever. The would be mayor is a dreadful character. The subplot over the muslim teacher was preachy, telegraphed and cliched. It's crap.

The Danish original was quite good.

We'll agree to disagree then. I can see you are after a higher degree of believeability but I tend to suspend belief as long as it's not ludicrous.
Given the format of the show (one episode+one day) we would still be waiting after years and years for progress if this was at the pace of a true police investigation. Most people even find this slow going after a diet of CSI type crime shows.
The 'flaws' in the investigation aren't that glaring as to make you think they are totally incompetent and are obviously plot devices.

I love watching GoT but would hardly want to start picking at the plot and characterisations or it would ruin the watching.

As I say, I haven't seen the Danish version. I do understand it was critically acclaimed, but can't believe that it also didn't have similar plot devices to twist and turn the story even if they were done much better.

For me the main pleasure is the quality of the acting. When a clue becomes a dead end (as they usually do) you really feel for the main character in her frustration but determination to plow on.

I'll give it a few more days and start collating the votes to see what I'm watching! I watched the end of Chicago Code and am a few episodes into Boss while waiting for votes to come in. (TBH I forgot about this thread and just started watching the other shows).

I started on The Killing at the end of last week and by Tuesday night was upset to realise I had caught up entirely and now have to wait for each ep. I don't rate it as 'brilliant' but something about it made me want to keep going as fast as possible.
It's not the 'who-dunnit' part either. I am happy for that to not be revealed yet. I'm not even trying to guess (much), I think it's just that the characters are (mostly) so well acted that you start to care about what is happening to them.
The guy that plays the ex-junkie cop is putting in one of the best performances I have seen on TV.
BTW IMO the second series/continuation is even stronger than the first.

The pilot sets up the story but it is each following episode where the characters are opened out just a little more each time and become more and more complex that draws you in.
I can see why some characters were seen as one-dimensional to start with, but they get deeper and deeper as the show progresses.
I read an interview with the Politician guy and he said that the actors themselves only learn the character script by script. They haven't been given a forward view so as not to be acting any differently than how the writers want to portray them each episode. This keeps you really guessing as to all of their motives in life (and probably stops the baddie acting like one).

started on S3 of Justified, I have to say there are some very funny one liners littered throughout this show!

I think it was Nepia who mentioned Dickies character, he is almost a sidekick kind of character who you expect to get killed any time now as he has no importance to the overall story, despite the fact he does.

The lines on there are classic. Dickie is one of those characters where he's annoying and an idiot, but I'd kind of feel sorry for him if he bought it.

The conversations between Raylan and Boyd always crack me up, and I'm really quite fond of the Chief.

Watched the Pilot (Ep 1 & 2) of the Killing last night, certainly was enough to capture me to keep watching.

Game of Thrones - on the series, I feel it seems a bit more rushed than the first one??

Onto something in the 3rd episode...
NOw I cant recall alot being made of Laures Tyrell and King Renly actually being gay in the books, I thought it just had hints and alluded to it??
Therefore I was a bit surprised they had that whole gay scene, moreso when Renley is to be killed not long after.
GoT2, while very high in production values like series 1 seems to me to be lacking focus.
I guess it's part of trying to condense a long detailed book into 10 hours but at least series 1 had just two main characters to hang the story on.
Series2 seems to be a bit scattered in comparison

Saw first episode of S2 last night. Great show but yeah I agree there are a hell of alot of characters and subplots for a one hour show.
Speaking of things Danish above. Tim do you actually understand that "language"? The joke in Norway is that they just make shit up and people pretend to understand.

the thing about GoT is it only gets worse with new characters entering all the time, and some have ipacts on the overall storyline as well.

I have heard a 3rd seaosn of GoT has been confirmed, I hope they dont intend making the entire 3rd book into 1 series.

Book three of A Song of Ice and Fire is a beast and, IMO, there would be no way to cram it all into one ten-hour season. I've read comments from GRRM that book three will be split into two tv seasons (I think they're hoping for 12 episodes) but as you get further into the books the events that in each book aren't necessarily happening simultaneously.

IMO the difficulty, as the series goes on, is going to be retaining the interest of viewers who haven't read the books as new characters take more prominent roles and the old faves are sidelined and even killed off. Many long-time fans of the books will watch as we're just happy to see certain scenes come alive regardless of the confusing narrative.

On another note, not sure if I'm happy with all the changes they're making. Some of them seem to be going counter to important events on the horizon. I trust that the show runners have given this more thought than I have but small changes to speed things up can have a flow-on effect.

Is anyone else disapointed that they chose to have a linear storyline? A feature of many of the best chapters in the books are the flashbacks to the events of Robert's rebellion. Sad that we haven't got to see Rhaegar. Maybe a future series.

Yeah I'm about halfway through the 4th book and it'll be interesting if the TV series gets that far, as this book sees hardly anything of many of the main characters, and the introduction of yet more characters.
