The pilot sets up the story but it is each following episode where the characters are opened out just a little more each time and become more and more complex that draws you in.
I can see why some characters were seen as one-dimensional to start with, but they get deeper and deeper as the show progresses.
I read an interview with the Politician guy and he said that the actors themselves only learn the character script by script. They haven't been given a forward view so as not to be acting any differently than how the writers want to portray them each episode. This keeps you really guessing as to all of their motives in life (and probably stops the baddie acting like one).

started on S3 of Justified, I have to say there are some very funny one liners littered throughout this show!

I think it was Nepia who mentioned Dickies character, he is almost a sidekick kind of character who you expect to get killed any time now as he has no importance to the overall story, despite the fact he does.

The lines on there are classic. Dickie is one of those characters where he's annoying and an idiot, but I'd kind of feel sorry for him if he bought it.

The conversations between Raylan and Boyd always crack me up, and I'm really quite fond of the Chief.

Way back in the thread someone was asking about 'The Killing' and there were comments about the US Version being crap.

I haven't seen the Danish version and while I don't doubt that it is very good, I started on the US version and haven't stopped. I really like it.

I imagine that it has been done very true to the original as the settings in Seattle and the constant rain give a very Euro feel. The acting is first grade. It is purposely a slow burner that squeezes out bits about the characters in very small doses and at times the story of the Victims family drags a bit and gets melodramatic.

I would recommend it if, like me, you can't be arsed with a foreign language veiwing. It's hardly crap.

Infact I got hooked on it enough to watch the second half of Series1 in succession last night and have started on Series 2.
Watched the Pilot (Ep 1 & 2) of the Killing last night, certainly was enough to capture me to keep watching.

Game of Thrones - on the series, I feel it seems a bit more rushed than the first one??

Onto something in the 3rd episode...
NOw I cant recall alot being made of Laures Tyrell and King Renly actually being gay in the books, I thought it just had hints and alluded to it??
Therefore I was a bit surprised they had that whole gay scene, moreso when Renley is to be killed not long after.
GoT2, while very high in production values like series 1 seems to me to be lacking focus.
I guess it's part of trying to condense a long detailed book into 10 hours but at least series 1 had just two main characters to hang the story on.
Series2 seems to be a bit scattered in comparison

Saw first episode of S2 last night. Great show but yeah I agree there are a hell of alot of characters and subplots for a one hour show.

Speaking of things Danish above. Tim do you actually understand that "language"? The joke in Norway is that they just make shit up and people pretend to understand.

the thing about GoT is it only gets worse with new characters entering all the time, and some have ipacts on the overall storyline as well.

I have heard a 3rd seaosn of GoT has been confirmed, I hope they dont intend making the entire 3rd book into 1 series.

Book three of A Song of Ice and Fire is a beast and, IMO, there would be no way to cram it all into one ten-hour season. I've read comments from GRRM that book three will be split into two tv seasons (I think they're hoping for 12 episodes) but as you get further into the books the events that in each book aren't necessarily happening simultaneously.

IMO the difficulty, as the series goes on, is going to be retaining the interest of viewers who haven't read the books as new characters take more prominent roles and the old faves are sidelined and even killed off. Many long-time fans of the books will watch as we're just happy to see certain scenes come alive regardless of the confusing narrative.

On another note, not sure if I'm happy with all the changes they're making. Some of them seem to be going counter to important events on the horizon. I trust that the show runners have given this more thought than I have but small changes to speed things up can have a flow-on effect.

Is anyone else disapointed that they chose to have a linear storyline? A feature of many of the best chapters in the books are the flashbacks to the events of Robert's rebellion. Sad that we haven't got to see Rhaegar. Maybe a future series.

Yeah I'm about halfway through the 4th book and it'll be interesting if the TV series gets that far, as this book sees hardly anything of many of the main characters, and the introduction of yet more characters.

The fourth and fifth books are - for the most part at least - split geographically rather than chronologically. The result being that there are a lot of new POV characters in book four that aren't necessarily fan favourites. Book five has a couple of new POV characters but also sees the return of the some fan faves from books one-to-three.

If the TV series gets that far - and at a guess I'd say that the events in books four and five wouldn't make it on to the screen until at least season five - I figure they'll probably combine books four and five into two (or more likely three) TV series. It'll be a massive achievement if they get that far.

It will also give George R R Martin a chance to write the sixth and seventh books.

Just finished watching all 5 seasons of 'The Wire'. Thanks to all for the recommendation, enjoyed it a lot (even season 5). My favourite series has to be 4, as I really liked the kids, closely followed by the Polacks of season 2.

Favourite characters, well it has to be Omar. But I liked Major Cole, Bunk, Lester, Marlo, Prez, Michael (and the rest of the kids), Snoop and sheeeeeeeeeeeeeet, even Senator Clay. McNulty, not so much, but I understand his role as the troubled central character. Season 4 was better because we had to deal with less of McNulty's demons.

My first impression wasn't that positive when I watched the first episode, as I thought it was going to a stereotypical, gangsta, drug, but I am glad I perservered, because I was hooked after episode 3.

I took a break after S3 and to be honest the premise of the education system in S4 didn't look that appealing. I have to say though I started on S4 about a week back and have just the last Ep to go. By far the best. It must be the instinct to protect and nurture kids or something but you really get put through the washer with these kids' stories. You can see what's coming for them and the unavoidableness of it all but that doesn't stop you rooting for them and hoping.
The way Michael's story was told was brilliant. Done very subtle and could have easily been over dramatized but this was really good.
Will watch S5 now with the feeling it will just be a 'fade out' to the body of work.

I see it has been confirmed that Alcatraz has been canned. No more.

The show just tried to be too mysterious and became a formula each week without letting out enough of the real story.

Great post Rusty (even if stolen!)
Some interesting shows canned, especially Terra Nova. Considering how much was spent must be rating poorly in the US?
Have heard reports of CSI NY and Miami being close to been cut, would have expected both those shows to continue for a few more years yet.
Also good to see Fringe has survived as it was another that i read alot about being cancelled as well.

I read somewhere last week that another network is considering picking up Terra Nova, TR Jnr is most disappointed it has finished!
Also I dont think I saw Justified on that list Rusty??
Apparently Game of Thrones is the most pirated series of the year, and may become the highest of all time.
The fifth episode of the show was being downloaded approximately 2.5 million times a day after it aired, the report suggested.
Interestingly, Dexter was the most pirated show from 2011...

So I was watching Spartacus: Vengeance (yeah it's awful, don't).
And I happened to notice a former French (possibly Japanese) test player. Anyone else spot the resemblance?
