Book three of A Song of Ice and Fire is a beast and, IMO, there would be no way to cram it all into one ten-hour season. I've read comments from GRRM that book three will be split into two tv seasons (I think they're hoping for 12 episodes) but as you get further into the books the events that in each book aren't necessarily happening simultaneously. 
 
IMO the difficulty, as the series goes on, is going to be retaining the interest of viewers who haven't read the books as new characters take more prominent roles and the old faves are sidelined and even killed off. Many long-time fans of the books will watch as we're just happy to see certain scenes come alive regardless of the confusing narrative. 
 
On another note, not sure if I'm happy with all the changes they're making. Some of them seem to be going counter to important events on the horizon. I trust that the show runners have given this more thought than I have but small changes to speed things up can have a flow-on effect. 
 
Is anyone else disapointed that they chose to have a linear storyline? A feature of many of the best chapters in the books are the flashbacks to the events of Robert's rebellion. Sad that we haven't got to see Rhaegar. Maybe a future series.

Yeah I'm about halfway through the 4th book and it'll be interesting if the TV series gets that far, as this book sees hardly anything of many of the main characters, and the introduction of yet more characters.

The fourth and fifth books are - for the most part at least - split geographically rather than chronologically. The result being that there are a lot of new POV characters in book four that aren't necessarily fan favourites. Book five has a couple of new POV characters but also sees the return of the some fan faves from books one-to-three. 
 
If the TV series gets that far - and at a guess I'd say that the events in books four and five wouldn't make it on to the screen until at least season five - I figure they'll probably combine books four and five into two (or more likely three) TV series. It'll be a massive achievement if they get that far. 
 
It will also give George R R Martin a chance to write the sixth and seventh books.

I took a break after S3 and to be honest the premise of the education system in S4 didn't look that appealing. I have to say though I started on S4 about a week back and have just the last Ep to go. By far the best. It must be the instinct to protect and nurture kids or something but you really get put through the washer with these kids' stories. You can see what's coming for them and the unavoidableness of it all but that doesn't stop you rooting for them and hoping. 
The way Michael's story was told was brilliant. Done very subtle and could have easily been over dramatized but this was really good. 
Will watch S5 now with the feeling it will just be a 'fade out' to the body of work.

I see it has been confirmed that Alcatraz has been canned. No more. 
 
The show just tried to be too mysterious and became a formula each week without letting out enough of the real story.

Re: Tyrell and Renley - subtle in the books. Picked up by me in retrospect and not at the time. Hahaha. I was like: oh-kay. Not so subtle in the tv show.

Great post Rusty (even if stolen!) 
Some interesting shows canned, especially Terra Nova. Considering how much was spent must be rating poorly in the US? 
Have heard reports of CSI NY and Miami being close to been cut, would have expected both those shows to continue for a few more years yet. 
Also good to see Fringe has survived as it was another that i read alot about being cancelled as well.

I've watched all of them Don Frye. They were unashamedly B grade and I loved them. I enjoyed them more than Homeland (where I didn't like a single character or care what happened to them). would it be more benefiial for cable studio's to make episodes available, outside of the us, immediately for a small fee (say $4 similar to itunes) rather than wait till it gets picked up by o/s networks 6 months later? sure, people would still pirate it but the revenue must be worth it and i am sure it would still be picked u[p by o/s networks just for a slightly smaller fee. 
 
say 1mil people d/l it for $4 an episode (the majority will still DL illegally). across a 12 part series that is still $48mil.

I think that is the way it is likely to go eventually but in the short-to-medium term content providers like HBO have to honour their contracts with the cable companies which (I imagine) have clauses regarding bypassing them and selling content direct to customers simultaneously. 
 
Once people can buy only the shows they want with no delay, many will choose to cancel subscriptions to HBO and Showtime. Management are rightly concerned about cannibalisation of their existing (fairly predictable) revenue streams for new risky and probably unpredictable revenue streams. I can see why no one wants to be the guy who jumps first.

Quo vadis

The selling direct should only be an option where no other options exist. In the USA that is not the case, you can get hbo starz, amc, etc, in regions where there is no such option, provide the direct option. 
In the modern world people desire to watch and discuss online the latest show and participate in forums etc so waiting 6 month to see an episode is not cutting in anymore. 
Lost was a great example of the fan ecosystem that was created. Fans discussed and debated and length and in intricate detail all the plot twists and possible scenarios, there were dozens of fan forums, it was more than just a tv show. If you in NZ watched it on network tv, you had no real ability to be involved in the lost universe. 
This a real time world. consumers want real time content.

Terra Nova? I watched a few episodes, but God it was corny and cheesy behind belief. Poorly acted. 
The only reason it lasted a season was the set in Oz cost so damn much that Fox were pretty muchforced to pick it up for a full season with out knowing how well the pilot went. It was a lemon. 
 
Wish "the event " had gotten pick up though, that was an interesting show. "v" aswell.

OK so after reading a few good write-ups both on this thread and elsewhere, I have downloaded the first season of Justified. I watched the first three episodes, and frankly I'm underwhelmed. It's a bit cliche, a bit cheesy and doesn't seem to have much of an ongoing plot. 
 
My question is this- does it get better? Is it worth sticking with, or is it just not the series for me? 
 
If it stays like the first three episodes then I probably won't continue. Then again the first three episodes of the Wire were pretty shit as well, and that turned out pretty nicely...
