2016 was meant to be the tricky year following the 2015 departures, maybe it will be this year? With the team looking shaky on the EOYT last year and continuing through this series, albeit not helped by injuries and suspensions.

@Tim I think he's really only there for injury cover. A genuine lock that is a very good lineout option. They basically play the two starters for the whole game if they haven't got injured. Scott came on tonight for what 5 minutes?

I know this doesn't fit your Luatua argument πŸ™‚ but if Squire is fit, he's in the 23.

And Squire was injured for the entire series. Picking an injured player ahead of Luatua was another Hansen stroke of genius.

@Tim yeah that was not a great call in hindsight.

Sopoaga is fit isn't he? I would have had him in the mix over Frodo Bogans . What happened that made it ok for him to be selected when he was leaving and not Luatua?

Not trolling here, but I find that incredible.

I can understand the average Kiwi supporter being unfamiliar with a lot of the BIL players, and vice versa.

But not to have watched the SA provinces and /or SA national team and not know the calibre of your upcoming opponents when you play in the same competition each year is baffling.

Their teams are shit, we hardly play them, the games are on at 3 am and their tests were after the Lions. Most people only have time to watch 2-3 games a weekend. Better to watch the NZ teams.

WhiteMike - you're normally sensible, but... "baffling" ? You watch Italian and French club games? And figure out the 6N form from that?
Re-reading - yeah, we play SA each year... but what VictorianKiwi was saying was that this SA team is shaping up to be something different than last year.

                  This.

There's saturation, too. With S12, if you watched 5 games a weekend you wer ebasically up to date. The quality was good, too. These days I'm lucky to watch a game a weekend, and it's just not worth watching non-NZ sides becuase (frankly) they are generally rubbish. Hell, I struggle to watch the Blues in SA - the timing is terrible with a young family.

Trying to follow 6 SA sides with diluted talent is just not on. I've got better things to do in my life other than that.

For all those saying Gatland isn't fit to coach the ABs,

Graham Henry won 11 consecutive games as Wales coach, but won no silverware. And failed miserably as a Lions coach.

Steve Hansen won no silverware as Wales coach.

Gatland has won silverware for Wales and won & shared a series as Lions coach.

Give him the best cattle and he may become the best farmer.

And I'm not a Gatland fanboy, but appreciate what he's achieved.

Any other AB coach would have been crucified for this nonsensical decision. Hansen does lead a charmed life when it comes to the media. Let's give our 2nd best kicker the kicking duties since he has seniority. Total BS call.

Do people really think it was the game plan's fault we did not win last night? It seems obvious to me that the problem was in our execution. We conceded 22 turnovers. You don't win many games conceding that much ball. I judge a coach on a game plan. It's the responsibility of the players to execute that game plan. That did not do that so this loss is on them.

Could be an interesting season with a few more twists and turns yet ,

Havent seen them myself, but all reports are saying the Boks are turning the corner ,and starting to look the real deal
                            England at twickers later on

Not trolling here, but I find that incredible.

I can understand the average Kiwi supporter being unfamiliar with a lot of the BIL players, and vice versa.

But not to have watched the SA provinces and /or SA national team and not know the calibre of your upcoming opponents when you play in the same competition each year is baffling.

Their teams are shit, we hardly play them, the games are on at 3 am and their tests were after the Lions. Most people only have time to watch 2-3 games a weekend. Better to watch the NZ teams.

There are these two things called the internet and being able to record tv programmes to watch at your leisure

How does the internet help with anything I said? Also I can't record TV, FTR. You also didn't address the points that their teams are shit and most people only have time to watch three games a weekend. South Africa are in the NH timezone. As much reason to watch NH rugby as there is to watch them.

Most rugby matches have about 30 mins of action.

I record them and fast forward through the non-action. Surprising how much rugby can be watched this way.

                            PS I don't have kids

For all those saying Gatland isn't fit to coach the ABs,

Graham Henry won 11 consecutive games as Wales coach, but won no silverware. And failed miserably as a Lions coach.

Steve Hansen won no silverware as Wales coach.

Gatland has won silverware for Wales and won & shared a series as Lions coach.

Give him the best cattle and he may become the best farmer.

And I'm not a Gatland fanboy, but appreciate what he's achieved.

@hydro11 Maybe the coach has something to do with the execution? Maybe he organises training to execute the game plan? Maybe he has some vague relationship to the selection process? Maybe he can do something like choose a game plan to suit his players?

                                What an absolutely baffling post.

But he did choose a game plan to suit his players. For instance, he picked Savea because he wanted to have a power winger. He wanted a power winger because he wanted to run more at the inside channels. Ioane wouldn't have provided that.

Hansen also picked combinations - he brought in three Hurricanes players. So no excuses for a lack of execution there.

The real question for you is did you disagree with the plan of targeting the inside channels? If so, how would you have combated the rush defence?

Interesting revisionism there, Wales were a fucking embarrassment when Henry took over . Woodward won a rwc but failed more miserably as lions coach. The Aussie team Gatlands lions team beat is the wallabies at their lowest ebb in a long long time.

I hope Gatland is never abs coach .
