No he didn't, the Canterbury blindside clearly entered the ruck well in front of the ball when he took out the HB player.

    Bizarre decision there.

Allardyce made himself part of the ruck, so that Canterbury player had every right to clean him out.

@Gunner Interesting point you make Gunner but where is the off side line in situations like that? He appeared to join from the side and in front of the Canterbury halfback who had the ball in his hands.

Yeah, I tend to think it should have been a penalty to Canterbury for the first infringement - Allardice on the half, no try as Princip illegally cleared out and opened the hole.

Bloody hell, Bateman was standing in our backline when he made a tackle in that passage.

    The lineouts don't though.

I'd have to watch again but I didn't think the 9 had it?

I thought he looked square on when he made the clean out (there is no gate as such these days), so fair game.

At the very least should have been a penalty for interfering with the halfback.

There is at least a couple of one positives to come from tonight.
    i) Sam McNichol, Hugh Renton and Geoffrey Cridge all got through the entire 80 minutes without getting injured
ii) Last years margin has been reduced
iii) HB scored 30% more points this year compared to last season
iv) One game closer to it being C Philpott's last

Shit, that was a tough watch. Wasn't at the game, so had to endure the commentators.
I really don't like this ref either. And geez, really hoping those injuries to Dixon, West and Mikaele-Tu'u aren't too serious. Ihaia may have a broken nose, Dixon injured his hip and Marino went off with a rib injury.

As expected before the season start, it's going to be some long 9 weeks.
I really don't get why they keep playing Falcon at fullback. He obviously can't catch high balls, one of the core skills a fullback should master. Put McNicol there! Grrrrrr
And Cardiff Vaega, does he come on the field with grease on his hands?
Coaches need to come up with a plan to deal with rush defence. Whatever they are doing, it ain't working!

Next game will be another horror match, because we'll play Wellington.

    So frustrating!

I'm probably repeating myself, but which masochistic fuckwit at the HBRU picked Canterbury for the cross-over match that they got to chose? Nobody in their right mind expects us to beat them, so whyyyyyyyyyy?

Maybe they are scouting Canterbury B for players for next year

Feel for you guys as a Taniwha supporter, when injuries strike, sometimes it's like a horror show..!

Just a couple of observations from an outsider looking in,one of the positives is seeing Brad Webber back on the field,Chris Eaton this evening as he was against the Bay last week was very poor, his option taking leaves a lot to be desired, and his passing at times is either rocks or diamonds.

This seems to have transferred on to Ihaia West, hardly seen him take on the line.and one thing I have noticed is the Magpies chase game.at times it's been non existent, and against teams like Canterbury who can make you pay,it's something they will need to sort out.

Ben Mays injury has not helped, having some promising, but inexperienced props at this level is a tough introduction to Mitre 10 cup..

Add in some of the basic errors in terms of handling, they are real coach killers when playing the Canterbury teams of this world.

Mind you,I found myself a bit envious of some of the talent Canterbury have at their disposal..it's frightening to think, whilst the Magpies had injuries of their own,who the cantabs had unavailable

Hope you guys can get some of your injured bods back on the paddock

So glad we can't get relegated from the Championship! I reckon we would end up in the Heartland competition in one season.

If you are the last team to pick you obviously have to take whoever is left so you don't get a choice. Maybe it was the situation in this case.

@Higgins It seems like they waited until Philpott returned from the U20 World Championship and he obviously had no time for the Magpies before then.

    Chickens hunting the fox?

I wouldn't invite those poaching bastards anywhere near my developing rugby teams.

    Hawke's Bay had no choice.

In round 2 of the crossover picks, the picks were made by the Championship teams in reverse seeding order for a home game.

    The order of picking was:
    1st - 7 Northland chose waikato
    2nd - 6 Southland chose North Harbour
    3rd - 5 Manawatu chose Ta$man
4th - 4 Bay of Plenty chose Counties Manukau
    5th - 3 Wellington chose Taranaki
    6th - 2 Otago chose Auckland
    7th - 1 Hawke's Bay left with Canterbury
