Movie review thread...

In anticipation of the new Blade Runner I just watched the old one. Overall not the most amazing flick. As if LA will look like that in the future ? Perhaps it's a bit high brow for a simple guy like me....
How many film franchises can Harrison Ford redo?!?!?! Here's hoping he doesn't revisit Working Girl.

I cannot grasp the Hollywood obsession with remakes right now. There are millions of books that could be adapted, and they keep remaking movies that literally no one has called for a remake of because 1 the original was perfection or 2 the original story was so fucking bad that it should have never been made in the first place.
What remake has been better? (I see the next remake is going to be Hocus Pocus, the witchy story with Sarah Jessica, Kathy, and Bette. Why the fuck that needs to be redone, I'm sure I don't know...) -

I was wondering if we've got a skewed view of how many remakes/sequels/etc there really are compared to the past, but then a quick Asking-of-Jeeves shows there are 47 this year alone. WTF?
And 121 in total in development? I gave up reading the list, when I got weirdly excited/depressed to see "Blue Thunder", being remade with a drone. A drone pilot who measures his sanity with a watch - how's that gonna work? -

I can understand a remake of a movie if you think you can adapt it and make it better - like Beauty & the Beast or The Jungle Book. But a lot of the time it's just a bullshit money spinner that they know will be shit, but make it anyway as it will make enough of a profit.

Just saw the new Bladerunner and am pleasantly surprised, a worthy sequel.
Old style movie that took its time and looked fantastic.
Worth watching this non-spoiler review of the new Bladerunner.
The film has stayed with me, I want to go see it again.

Baby Driver - enjoyed this, although the choice of getaway cars in a couple of the heists was odd.
Eiza Gonzalez is H.A.F, first spotted her in the Dusk to Dawn series...Lily James is fine too
4 driving songs out of 5 unecessary drifts around corners
Just watched Baby Driver. Quite good fun although the constant music references and ridiculous action at the end was a bit much. The future mrs MN5 and I agreed that Eliza Gonzales who I initially thought was Jessica Alba is indeed HAF and we also both thought the bloke that played her boyfriend was the bloke who played Negan in Walking Dead.
Definitely a 'leave your brain at the door' flick though. 2.5 mistaken identities out of 5
Also saw 'It'. Some genuinely awesome scares, But overall pretty fucken dumb to be honest. The kids go through some absolutely horrific stuff one second, the next it's banter and dick jokes with their mates. Also not sure why the Supernatural clown seemed to lose his powers at the end? ( hard to elaborate on this without spoilers )
2.5 decent Stephen King adaptations out of 5 Bad ones.
Finally watched Schindlers List for the first time in years. An absolute bonafide classic of a flick. Seeing Neeson these days with his endless array of bullshit tough guy flicks compared to his performance in this is weird....ditto Ralph Feines who plays one of the most evil fluffybunnies in history. How these two reunited in Clash of the Titans is anyone's guess.
Anyway, The movie is just a masterpiece. It's long and not exactly full of action as such but holy shit, so compelling.
4.9 Jews out of 5 Nazis

4.9 Jews out of 5 NazisMy takeaway from Schindler's List was how good a motivator Ralph's character Amon Göth was.

Filming in black and white was brilliant. Such a gripping emotional film but not one I'd watch again and again

No idea who's in it, they blacked out every window of the pub during the week, and I couldn't be arsed paying attention when they seemed to be milling around out the back - possibly filming a couple of outdoors scenes.
But one of the actors from GameOfThrones was in the place a few weeks beforehand - I think the guy who plays the prick who wanted to be captain of the Night's Watch? Or the original captain - Mormont? Fuck knows - the landlord was all excited and tried to point him out to me, but I don't go to the pub to talk to or meet people, I go to the pub to quietly get drunk, alone.
But yeah - tough ask. For ages I had it mixed up in my head, and for some reason thought it was Get Carter they were remaking. I guess everybody can be thankful they're not aiming that high. -
What Happened to MOnday
Interesting film, set in the future where population has exploded and worldwide food shortage, which has lead to GM food, but this has had a side effect of multiple births...and a new law means you are only allowed 1 kid..so if you have more, all bar one are taken and 'frozen' for a time in the future.
Anywhoo, Willem Dafoe has 7 girls, and doesnt want to give them up, and to allow each to go out, he names them after the day of the week and they can only go on that day.
I quite liked it, Noomi Rapace plays all 7 girls, and much like Tatiana Mislany in Orphan Black, she can be hot as one of her identities and not hot as others....
3.5 identical kids out of 5 days of the week.

@mn5 I read something yesterday that said millennials are totally unimpressed with blade runner - find it slow boring and basically meh
I rewatched it tonight (for about the 4th or 5th time) in preparation for the sequel tomorrow - it's really not as good as I remember ....
I actually think now (clearly I used to be a film snob) that it's way too arty. Although, maybe I just know more about editing/sound design now but there were sequences that I think could be cut without affecting the tone of the film.
Despite being a little disappointed, I'm still looking forward to the new one.
@Bovidae A real completest would find all 7 versions and the mythical 4 hour Scott version.
@taniwharugby I don't actually find Noomi Rapace attractive so I'm stuffed - whereas I find pretty much all (maybe no the dreadlock one) versions of Tatiana Mislany to be hot (which reminds me I really do have to watch the rest of Orphan Black, I think I'm still on S3).
