As anyone (and RT i am looking straight at you) watched Dave Grohl's documentary "Sound City"? I love me a music documentary, and this one looks pretty damn good, seems like a lot of pretty awesome people went through that studio, and Dave got a lot of them to have a chat.<br />

I saw that one when it was released, and again pair of times on TV. It is excellent. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it was originally a one-man play. Altman basically just turned the camera on and captured it. Doesn't particularly look like Dick, but then later embodies him perfectly, especially the drinking (apparently he could get hammered on a single cocktail) and venting at the portraits on the wall. -
Lawless: Tom Hardy, Shia LeBouf, Gary Oldman, a tripping Guy Pearce, and Jason Clarke (the cop from The Chicago Code and one of the brothers from Brotherhood TV shows). Set in the prohibition era, Hardy, LeBouf and Clarke are three brothers selling and making moonshine. Guy Pearce is a law enforcement guy who first attempts to shake them down and then tries killing them. I was really looking forward to this film and although good, I wouldn't call it outstanding. Hardy who is pretty good in everything normally seemed to be overacting, LeBouf played the whiny youngest brother too well, Oldman was underused as a gangster and Pearce was very odd. I'm about to read the book that it's based on called the "The Wettest County in the World". 6.5/10<br />

Margin Call: Kevin Spacey, Spock (the new one), Demi Moore (who seems to be one of the few stars with good plastic surgery, she looks good), The Mentalist, Paul Bettany are bankers (basically Goldman Sachs but called something else) at the beginning of the financial crisis working out what to do when one of their analysts discovers that they are excessively leveraged and a 25% drop in value of mortgage securities they hold will cause a loss greater than their market capitailsation. A bit more exciting than the Too Big To Fail which was a more 'real' version. 8/10 -
thought Pearce was v-good for most of the movie, although the character seemed too unbelievable at the end. Thought the ending with Hardy was a bit weak, although if thats what happened, thats what happened...<br />

IIRC the book was written by the brothers family, so how much that skews the actual facts is open for debate I guess... -

Yeah, the book was written by Shia LeBouf's character's grandson. Although the book is more about the case of the District Attorney's (the guy in the car) court case - he got charged with racketeering I think and the brothers and most of the other townsfolk gave evidence.<br />

I thought the ending was the worst part about the whole movie TBH. -
yeah it was a shitty ending, but I guess if thats how it happened...?<br />

Although I am guessing there was alot of poetic licence involved, so why not give it a better ending.<br />

Resident Evil Retribution - more of the same really, but at least Milla Yoyovich is easy on the eye, plus it is easily under 1.5 hours. -

Came recommended from Deadspin, who called it the "best sports movie ever" (or something). It's not. And, it's only tangentially related to sports, tho' there is certainly a LOT of superstitious stuff about the Philadelphia Eagles at the centre of the whole thing, esp. from the Robert DeNiro character. It's a romance comedy about two loons (Bradley Cooper and the Hunger Games chickette). Being that it's directed by David O. Russell (Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings, Huckabees, etc.), this isn't your regular romance flick. -
Bourne Legacy - milking a franchise? On its own is your runof the mill action film, sits outside themBourne books although ran concurrent with the last Bourne movie too...but is watchable, although a bit long.

I mostly enjoyed it because I was trying to join the dots with the original Bourne that it runs parallel with. But, the ending annoyed the hell on me, a way too long chase and then an abrupt ending solely designed to set up a sequel. -
if they can entice Damon back into it too would be good...his woodeness works well as Bourne.

OK saw Skyfall last night. It was OK but too long. Looked good but if that is as has been reported one of the best Bonds ever its clearly only a franchise for the fan boys. Still it keeps the Brocolli's in brocolli.<br />

Worried bout Hobbit. Caught end of trailer. Seemed self indulgent and playing for laughs (New Worlfd all the way to the bank????) Gotta wonder how a slim childrens book can be padded out to 3 movies. I fear it will have all the poor bits of LOTR - Legolas surfing down the oliphant - bleech. Still I live in equal parts hope, anticipation and expectation. -

I haven't seen the movie but of all the criticisms in advance, this one doesn't worry me in the least.<br />

The book has a background of mythology, meaning, I can write a single expository sentence, "Army engages big battle with enemy," that takes me all of 5 seconds to type and 3 less seconds to read. But you can make that battle and all the events that lead-up to and transpire within to play out dramatically as long as you want.<br />

I could condense WW2 to an essay-length assignment - but that doesn't mean there's only a 20 minute movie in it. Think of William Shirer's single volume "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" ... from the [i]footnotes alone[/i], you could get The Wannsee Conference, The Longest Day, The Bunker, Stalingrad, Saving Private Ryan, Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbor, and even things like Schindler's List, Casablanca, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Dambusters, The Great Escape, Stalag 17, Midway, Tora Tora Tora, They Were Expendable, The Dirty Dozen, Das Boot, Bridge Over the River Kwai, Objective! Burma, The Benny Goodman Story, To Hell and Back ... even Inglorious Bastards!! -- that's a lot of hours of entertainment ripped from the endnotes and I'm only getting started!
