Underwhelmed, especially as I really enjoyed the first one. I know they needed to split up the new characters for their various story arcs, but they had good chemistry in the first movie. Kind of sucked losing that, particularly when the other combos (Luke and Ren, Finn and Rose) were pretty meh imo.

Really wanted to like it but just didn't feel the magic this time round.

Felt like there was a lot of set up for the next one .

Watched it a third time and still liked it.

Other than one scene that has already been mentioned I think the movie has a decent balance of nostalgia and unexpected action.

The ‘personal sacrifice’ elements had more of a Star Trek feel to it but nothing that I didn’t mind.

3 times already? I'd love to have that kind of free time

It’s called multi tasking. First viewing was a night out with the fellas for the 12:01 am opening night. Then took two of my kids the night after for a 9pm. Then the last one was date night with the missus for a 10pm.

2nd viewing yesterday after Xmas shopping. Rose has not grown on me, put it that way. Poe is a pretty poor actor. Admiral purple hair is a dick. Casino scene still stupid. Hux still a bitch.

Movie is awesome though. Hopefully catch it again over the break.

Ive seen him in other stuff and thought he was pretty good, agree he sucks for some reason in this though.

I don't get the issues with Isaac - he seems to be playing Poe as a cocky hotshot pilot, which is what his character is supposed to be. I assume that his arc will see him become a better leader in the next episode. The issue with him is that the Laura Dern stuff didn't really work.

Funny to say that Isaac is a pretty poor actor, he's great in stuff like Show Me A Hero etc and I think he's probably rated pretty highly 'by the industry' (he'll likely win an Oscar - ba doom tish - pretty soon).

Ignoring the Oscar pun I thought he was good in ex machina , I hate the interaction with the round droid that was only written in for merchandising reasons.

Yeah, everyone was good in ex machina (ah Alicia Vikander, sigh).

I find it funny that people get annoyed with droid interaction - Lucas made a deal with Star War A New Hope to retain merchandising rights (as bad as he is at dialogue writing, he clearly has an eye for the money to be made from toys and tea towels), so it was always about merchandising. R2D2 was pretty much the same in the original trilogy. BB8 is no Jar Jar which is great, but you can't expect Star Wars to be held to some standard it never was in the beginning.

@crucial the letter to millenials may be stretching it a bit, but i had already decided the theme of this movie was "the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft a-gley"

seriously, it's a movie where NO ONE'S plans work out. And there are a lot of them

We'll let the Dreadnaught bomb them the fuck out. shit
We'll bomb this Dreadnaught. fuck everyone's dead
We'll jump to hyperspace and we'll be all good. hey wait
We can track them through hyperspace, they are fucked. or not
We'll just follow until they run out of fuel. they can hide from us?
We'll blow up the transports. what is that other ship doing?
We can turn off the tracker! wait we got ratted out
We'll slip away and no one will notice. we got ratted out
We'll send a signal, help will come. Or not
I'm going to kill Luke Skywalker. Or not
Luke will train me. Luke seems a little grumpy.
I can turn Ren. Okay i just made him the boss
Everything has happened by my design, now i have Rey. Fuck I'm dead.

The only dude whose plan worked is Luke, and he had to fucking die for it. This entire movie is about failure, and not meeting expectation.

This is such a top quality rant.

At the end of the day it's Star Wars. Flawed but awesome.

@mn5 it's honestly not a rant, it's just an observation. As you say, it's Star Wars, of course it's flawed.

I just thought this one had a different tone, because normally the good guys' plan works out, even as the bad guys doesn't. In this film, we had a departure (as crucial's article says) and even the good guys' plans don't work.

Come on, hands up, who was expecting the tracker dismantling plan to succeed in the nick of time?

It’s in the last line of M4ls rant , failure. Rei realised Finn was a twat- he failed to convince her otherwise long enough to get laid . He settled for Jabba the Eurasian instead.

In previous ones the good guys plans don't work either though. I'm fairly sure Han didn't think he'd leave Cloud City frozen in carbonate after all.

@mn5 the bad guys plan was to catch Luke. or kill him. He escapes, alive, that's a win. The Rebel fleet is safe. And they know where Han is. ESB isn't "the bad guys win this one". The Rebels end the movie in pretty good shape, with their spiritual leader, and their major weapon both safe as houses.

Well yeah but he was handless and traumatised. Its everyone's favourite movie, mine included but it did end on a downer. After all there was no guarantee they were gonna find Han safe and sound....

Speaking of which the standalone flick is due out in May. So basically four movies in less than four years. What a time to be alive.

Saw TLJ on New Years Eve at London's IMAX at Waterloo, bloody good night.
Was surprised by the storyline, I thought it was a huge improvement on TFA especially after a work colleague saw TLJ and couldn't get into where the story went.
Enjoyed the fight scenes immensely; the Emperors Royal Guard hand-to-hand combat stuff was well choreographed and looked strenuous for all the actors involved. Kylo Ren has grown on me since TFA. Thought he and Rey seemed more comfortable with their characters and where they were going. Part of me wanted to shout Death to the Resistance! Death to the First Order! Let a new alliance begin! The legacy lives on....
All followed up with the worlds biggest steak and ale pasty, coffee and then on to a round of beers. How good can a new years eve night get?

    Took the boys again.

Much like the Emperor did in ROTJ Snoke clearly got caught up in his own hubris and paid the price when a less powerful but possibly more aware pupil put an end to him. I wonder which of them is actually more powerful, Palpatine or Snoke? Seeing bits of him lying around was pretty graphic for Star Wars. I never realised it sliced his hands off too.

How many Red Guards were there? Boys and I figured anywhere between 8 and 10.

Both Rey and Ren have grown massively in power in a short time. It's pretty clear to me no one else in the saga apart from Leia has force powers, I'm assuming more will be unearthed for the next movie.

I also didn't realise how big those new walkers are. There were a couple of normal AT ATs next to them and they looked like terriers beside a bunch of Great Danes.

Poe is a terrible actor but Finn and Rose are way more annoying. Benicio Del whathisnames character is so pointless it's not funny.

Saw it again tonight. Have completely changed my opinion, and now i love it. The theming, symbolism and acting are fucking great. Some very nice shots too.

    Adam Driver fucking kills it.

The bits i loved the first time i still love. The bits i hated seem inconsequential now.

Its a very brave movie and I'm genuinely excited to see the conclusion

Acting????? Did you not see Poes performance? He's terrible.

Actually to be fair most of the rest were very good.
