The reaction of current and former players to Warner on twitter has been notably different to the other two all week
I was playing for England against Australia in a one-day international in Sydney and I had just been dismissed for a second-ball duck, lbw to Mitchell Starc. As I was walking off, head down, David Warner charged over and screamed abuse in my face.
I don’t need to repeat what he said, but that story from 2015 is enough to explain why a lot of cricketers around the world have little or no sympathy after hearing Warner had been suspended for 12 months. Many of them will feel this is a classic case of cricketing karma. As soon as you get personal on the field, you will find yourself with enemies.

Haddin in particular was a grade A fluffybunny that day. They were so much better than us in that match, there was no need for the vitriol

Easy to forget if Warner and co had managed to get away with this and done it again (and again) and it was successful
Their cheating could have ended careers.
Their mental disintegration approach has been incredibly ruthless, it has ended several careers.
The English alone have lost several high profile players who went from being very successful to a shadow of their former selves. They have taken much delight and glee from breaking down other teams. ( Jonathon Trott anyone?)

I guess I'm not surprised at the severity of the sentences - I thought it would be either six months or a year.
I follow your point comparing ball tampering with match fixing, but in my mind they're somewhat in the same ballpark (not the crazy dismissals of that video a month or so ago where a whole team is throwing the match), but the Hansie Cronje/ Lou Vincent type of fixing where a couple of guys in a team are conscripted to throw their wickets away. Main difference is that the Aussies were doing it for the team not for their direct personal enrichment.
Maybe it's closer (ballpark) to having several players in a rugby team caught using PEDs. Basically it's premeditated cheating to try to give your team a significant advantage. As someone points out above, the immediate follow-up (tape rather than sandpaper, etc) wasn't flash either.
I can understand the anger in Oz as well. It's a bit like if a group of ABs were caught using PEDs - it kind of invalidates some of what has gone before and some of what will happen in the future - at least in terms of internet/media "banter". Every time the Aussies win, there will be "check the ball" comments somewhere. I'd be fucking furious if it was the ABs or the Black Caps.
And to avoid calls of naivety - I'd already be amazed if there had never been a single AB who has used PEDs - and the same goes for every other major international team.
Years ago I worked for a bank and probably knew/knew of about 300 various staff, of whom nine were sacked for fingers in the till. There's a proportion of cheats in the population.

100% agree. Dragging his wee girls in front of the cameras as props to garner sympathy is beyond disgusting. This is about YOUR cheating, and YOUR bad behaviour on the field, you fucking asshole. Your teammates stood up and took it.

That comment shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the line.
See there is this line.
Getting stuck into Davey about his Mrs on the field? That is absolutely over the line. They aren’t a part of the game, they didn’t ask to be involved - leave them out of this.
Davey has been caught cheating in an on field incident? Quick get the wife and kids, see if we can get granny Warner out of the nursing home too. Using your wife and kids as a shield in the media is absolutely within the line.
Your comment criticizing him for using his wife and kids like this is most certainly over the line. Leave them out of this.

The level of vitriol towards Warner in this thread is ugly....and revealing. Some posters have shown they are cut from the same cloth as the man they are raging about.

Can't speak for the others here, but I never ran up to a dismissed batsman and yelled abuse straight in his face nor did I ever cheat. I would also never consider using my kids to shield me from a shit storm that was entirely my own making.
Warner is a cnut. Simply pointing that out does not then make someone a cnut themselves. That's weird logic right there.

If it was simply a case of pointing that out....then you would be right. But it isnt.
I think Warner is in all a nasty peice of work on thd field. But I can see context and scale.
